Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Markeda Greer-Isaac. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Markeda , thanks for joining us today. Looking back at the decisions you made early in your career, particularly whether to join a firm or start your own, do you feel you made the right choice for that stage of your career?
When I first started out I sub contracted through another firm. The reason I made that choice before I started my own I wanted the mentorship & guidance from someone already running a successful energy firm. A little bit of my backstory is I started in 2013 doing door-to-door sales as an agent going out direct marketing for one of the largest energy companies in the Texas market. Immediately I stepped into leadership roles and started to help train and develop others and discovered, I had a natural ability talent to lead and guide others to making above average income and taking advantage of the opportunity that I seen after several years of going door-to-door building sales team is working for other people I begin to think about. How can I do this for myself I got pretty good at it, so I figured I can go ahead and start my own independent firm and it started from eight to see a thought and an idea and with the knowledge that I acquired wow working in this industry, I begin to figure out and understand that I could eventually start my own, but before I actually got started, I partnered with one of the successful leaders and mentors in the industry and worked under them. It wasn’t until then, when I started to understand the business side of setting a business account up getting a DBA establishing your articles in the LLC getting paid as a business instead of as myself, and I took that knowledge, and I began to work on building my brand. I’ve always had an understanding about being independent and being entrepreneur. I just needed to acquire the knowledge on the business side of things which I did as a subcontractor after a few months and saving up about 30 to 40,000 I decided to go ahead and step into my own and get an office and begin conducting business in building an office independently, my first few years it was pretty fun and adventurous just to get up and hold myself accountable to providing a service in building something of my own. My main goal is to maintain building and adding different products and services and then help clients nationwide ultimate my end goal is to be one of the largest independently, black owned. Women owned energy, distribution companies with multiple products and services that helped clients all over the world, and to leave a legacy in generation of word for my family.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Markeda Greer I moved to Houston Tx from Little Rock Arkansas in 2011 were there wasn’t any independent contractor or commissions only opportunities at that time so I began to find my way looking for jobs I stumbled across this opportunity. I started working for a Retail Electricity Provider JUST ENERY in 2013 it was there where I learn about the door 2 door sales industry & getting paid full commission for the customers i went out & personally acquired 7 years later I decided I wanted to become a vendor/ broker & start my own independent operation & in 2018 I started YBE Marketing LLC: A Texas based energy firm with 10+ years of experience in the energy industry

The main thing I’m proud of. It’s just taking a leap of faith and believing in myself and my team and my supportive husband believe in my vision and just doing and just keeping helping people and help and providing solutions and bringing value to the marketplace. Ultimately being a woman on black owned business and understanding what I’m doing as for the culture makes me feel good knowing our ancestors will be proud.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn is everybody is not gonna be proud of you, and everybody’s not gonna understand your vision, and why you choose not to work the traditional 9 to 5 and want to build or have your own independent business and thinking everybody would understand the difference in what we do as independent contractors and 1099 and entrepreneur ship we don’t get paid by the hour and thinking everybody would understand that was a lesson I had to learn, because entrepreneurship is not for the week we are wired different
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A time that I had to pivot in business 2020 the COVID-19 hit and we’re no longer able to go out and to get our customers and talk to our clients face-to-face. That open the door to having to do business online in the zoom world appeared which allowed us to steal call in contact and transact business online our new best friend Therefore I transitioned into the financial services industry and got my license through the state Texas which is how I added the insurance services to my business and as of now, all my products and services were able to help online via zoom in our class can even self enroll in some of our products themselves, without even having to worry about having a face-to-face encounter best thing since sliced bread.
