We were lucky to catch up with Mark Mack recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mark, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Getting to the point where I could earn a full time living off my craft has been a beautiful journey. I say beautiful because I embrace the good and bad. I was working a full time job and booking comedy shows when I could and creating content for my social media on my off days. My fan base was starting to buzz but I didn’t have enough following to earn a living. I kept pushing and working and never giving up on my dreams. One day I recorded a voiceover video on my lunch break and posted it the video called “Slow Down PeeWee” went viral and did almost 19 million views on YouTube. My fanbase exploded to over 300,000 subscribers. I still was working my full time job but it wasn’t paying enough to even cover my rent. So I took a risk and quit my job. I had to learn how to turn my platform into a income . I was able to monetize all of my social media platforms . I created a website where I could sell merch and get a email list for my fan base. The email list is so powerful because even if my instagram or YouTube was hacked I still have a way to contact my fans. Im currently booking shows and traveling all over the world and able to earn a living doing what I love best making people laugh.
Mark, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a content creator actor and comedian from Alabama. I started doing funny videos on social media just as a hobby but after viral video after viral video I started to take it serious. I have been a social media influencer for over 2 years now I have over a half million followers and over 300,000 subscribers on YouTube. Last year my videos had over 80 million views. I’m really proud of how far I have came I remember having zero followers and people telling me nothing but negative things. To anyone with a dream dnt give up your time is coming.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
Seeing the impact my videos have on people. I have people write me all the time or see me and say how much content helped them through some tough times. We all have battle in life and it’s just a blessing to give people around the world a escape from the world with a few laughs.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I was working a full time job doing comedy shows and content creating on the side and still having money problems. I was making more money on the side than my full time job so I quit my job and started content creating full time but it was rough at first because I didn’t have a entrepreneurial mindset . My advice for anyone wanting to build a career off your talent learn the business first.
