Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mark Whitmore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mark, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I would have started earlier for sure! I have been in and out of many bands since high school, and just relatively recently started releasing my music on streaming services. Until I went online and found other people who were making instrumental music I didn’t think there would be anyone who would want to actually listen to the songs I made. Now here I am doing an interview about the songs I make. I makes me wonder how much further along I would be if I would have started earlier. I was recording my own music since 2006 (some of these songs I released in an EP Titled Back In The Day)

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m Mark. I go by Maneframe for all of my music creations online. I record, mix, and master my own instrumental music and release it online for others to enjoy. I first got into making music back in high school when I was in multiple different bands. I first learned to play guitar, and then moved on to keyboard, bass, and drums. After none of the bands really worked out (between work, a personal life, and the band I really had no time for myself) I started recording my own music on my own time. I was never a fan of my singing voice, so I create instrumental music. My goal as a musician is one of (or both) two things… I would like to have my music in movies, tv shows, commercials, and video games. Also, I would love to run into someone who I don’t know in public who is wearing a Maneframe shirt. I have recently started focusing more on building community with other musicians. I have worked with people from all different countries and all over the USA. I started creating playlists that I put independant musicians on to help increase our reach and hopefully build us all bigger audiences.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me there is absolutely nothing better then when I look at my artists app for my songs and see that there are actually people listening to my music. I set myself a goal last year to reach 100 followers on spotify, by the end of the year I ended up having over 300 people following my music there. I didn’t do much besides just posting about it on my social media so to me, that means so much that people took the time out of their days to listen to my music. When I am at work I almost always have a headphone in. I don’t always want to listen to songs with words because it cane be distracting, that is part of the reason I started releasing my own instrumental music. So that it helps me get through the days, and I hope that it can help others as well.

How did you build your audience on social media?
For me, the biggest thing that helped me build a following is when I started using my Maneframe_music page as my main social media account. What I mean by this is that most people post there music and expect people to come to them and just automatically want to follow them. The approach that worked for me is to be personable. What I mean by that is to actually go out and comment on other people’s posts. Share funny stories and photos, not just your music. When you do post a link to your work, type something out that explains it, don’t just post your links. People want to get something back when they follow someone. I personally also really like dad jokes. So I often share dad jokes when I am not posting about music. I also make it a point to always share my friends music as well. This gives your followers more to look for, more to interact with, more to benefit from.
