Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mark Warnick. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mark, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The first magazine I published seven years ago, 3vies volume 30, was a meaningful project. I had spent several years prior trying to taste many different things. I built apps, designed posters/illustrations, and tried wedding photography; I even tried to get my photographs published in other indie magazines. Then, when I was at a creative conference, it hit me to start my own indie magazine. That night I couldn’t sleep, so I began to write. I decided I would work an hour a day until I published it.
And then, I fell in love with the process! that hour often became two or three, sometimes four hours. It took a full year to complete, and after I sent it to the printers, literally the next day, I started working on volume 31. I had found something that filled me. The act of creating it was the reward.
I didn’t even know what I would write about at first. I had no plan, no structure. No real idea how to accomplish any of it. The topic began to be clear the more I worked on it. Everything I have created was revealed through doing the work. Creating the art. It became centered on learning how to live life intentionally. Initially, I documented my journey and then opened it up to discover how artists and other creatives craft the life they want through intentional actions.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m an artist based in San Antonio, Texas, where I run 3vies, an independent print magazine and media company that creates content centered on waking up to life, making decisions, and building habits that create the life you want.
An interesting thing happened when I turned 29…I woke up. It was as if I asked myself, “Did I choose this life?” I woke up to life and realized that I was on autopilot and had let society and the world around me make so many of my decisions subconsciously. We all come to that point in our life, and the sooner we wake up, the longer we have to begin crafting the life we want to live. I believe the life you want is found in discovering your own path, not following someone else’s.
I have spent the last seven years crafting my art into an annual print magazine. Each volume spans a year of my life and features interviews with artists/creatives that have inspired me, poetry, beautiful photography, and insightful lessons I have learned along the way.
Intentional living is about first becoming self-aware of what you want from life. It’s uncovering and leaning into who you are and getting honest with yourself. It’s about challenging your assumptions to create better beliefs. 3vies is french for “three lives,” meaning if you live your life intentionally, you can accomplish three lifetimes in one life.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on NFTs. (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I think NFTs, or more importantly, smart contracts (which is the technology behind the NFT), will be one of the most significant changes to the internet. More importantly, I think it will be a toolset that will allow so many artists to completely change the way they live for the better. I have a whole video where I enumerate in more detail why it matters. (3vies.com/nft-video)
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
