We recently connected with Mark Trudell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mark thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Since I was old enough to hold a pencil I have loved drawing. It was a way for me to express myself and stand out from everyone else. It took years of constant practice and effort to slowly improve and hone that skill, and I knew the only thing I ever wanted was to be an artist. However, when I was eighteen and ready to go to college I wasn’t able to due to financial inefficiencies. I came from a poor family and ample financial assistance was not available. It wasn’t until years later when I was in my thirties and living in New York that I had access to tuition free college and started attending Buffalo State University. There I was able to improve and expand my artistic skills exponentially. My strong drawing skills were able to let me learn new media very quickly and effectively. I only wish I could have begun my higher education journey earlier.
Mark, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I find visual art to be an ever evolving and challenging puzzle to try and solve. Every subject, theme, and concept has a myriad of possibilities, and I try my best to express these things in bold and dynamic ways. I push the boundaries of color and form to evoke a powerful response, whether it be positive, negative, or a mix of both. One thing you may notice of my portfolio is the variety of subject matter. I find there is so much in the world worth capturing in art, and an accomplished artist can capture anything that comes along, and this is the approach I take. I try to be bold and eye catching regardless of what I am creating, whether it is a painting, drawing, or sculpture.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My biggest goal as a creative is being able to work independently and be completely self-sustaining by doing what I love to do. I look forward to the day where I don’t have to clock in to a job and work for other people’s goals. I like my current job as a cast stone and plaster craftsman, but being able to work on artistic projects that are of my own choosing and that are personally important to me in a deeper level would be a true dream come true.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing to experience as an artist is spending weeks, sometimes months, on a piece and finally seeing it completed. Being able to see the fruits of your labor in such a definitive way is a feeling that can’t be matched in any other way. Also, the reaction you get from a client when you deliver a custom piece of art to them in person. I’ve done portraits of people’s loved ones that have passed away and when you surpass their every expectation, it is a magical experience.
