We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mark Taylor. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mark below.
Mark , appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Great question. I had always enjoyed music as a hobby and throughout my life, it was always something I enjoyed doing. However, during my pandemic experience while still in college, I had my first major songwriting cut which changed my outlook on the music industry. #1 and Platinum Selling Artist, Amii Stewart (singer of the 1979 #1 hit “Knock on Wood”), recorded a song I had written with some folks during the pandemic which showed me that I might have a shot at doing this if I wanted to. Fast forward a few months, the song was released as a single and it was amazing to see something I had a part in creating out in the world with someone else’s voice. Initially, I had planned on working on the business side of the music industry after college, but this cut showed me that I could be on the creative side as an artist and a writer as well.
Mark , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Sure! My name is Mark Taylor, and I’m a country artist and songwriter in Nashville, TN pursuing this crazy dream every day! I’ve spent the last 8 years of my life playing well over 1,000 live shows all over the country and was fortunate enough to have opened for folks like Big & Rich and Grammy winner Bryan White. I’ve had many different experiences in music: I’ve played in rock bands, classic rock bands, country bands, jazz bands, and many other groups. But the thing that drew me to country music was the story telling. I loved telling stories and being a part of music I really connected to.
So far in my career, I’d say I’m most proud of getting to open up for Big & Rich, such a fun time and a learning experience for sure. It was amazing to watch a really well-rehearsed (and phenomenal) group do their thing. I want fans to know that my music is for you guys! My job as an artist and writer is to hopefully make you feel something, so whether you’re having a beer on the beach, driving with your windows down, and going through a hard time, my music is for you guys to hopefully make your day a little bit better!
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to one day play stadiums. It’s obviously a lofty goal, but with continued hard work and dedication, I’m hopeful we can get there as a team. I have a wonderful team around me and I’m confident that one day we can get there!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
As an artist, I see and hear a lot of music and meet a lot of people involved with music, both as listeners and in the industry. The most rewarding thing, though, is seeing someone connect with a song of mine. Often, it’s not even the response I expect because people are affected differently by each song. Once we release music, it’s now the fans. I can no longer tell people what it means as the fans decide what it means to them and whether they connect or not with it is up to them. It’s always so much fun to hear their reactions to music, I love hearing how people perceive art!
