We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mark Murry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mark below.
Mark, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My journey into aerial photography began almost by accident.
While completing my bachelor’s degree, my advisor mentioned I needed one more elective. I chose a summer course in Agricultural Technology at USI. It was a class centered on how drones are used in modern farming. That course opened my eyes to the broader world of unmanned aerial systems and the regulations that govern them. By the end of the term, I had passed the FAA Part 107 exam and earned my commercial drone certification.
Soon after, I bought my first drone and quickly fell in love with the art of photography and the unique perspectives only aerial imagery can offer. That passion sparked what would become Evansville Aerial, a business that continues to evolve and grow.
It didn’t take long to realize that most clients wanted more than drone photos alone; they were looking for complete visual storytelling that blended aerial and ground-based work. That insight pushed me to study traditional photography in depth, adding another dimension to what I offer.
Today, while the drone remains my first love, I view it as one of several creative tools — all working together to capture my clients’ vision from every angle.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Evansville Aerial began with a simple passion… capturing the beauty of our city and its surroundings from above.
What started as a creative outlet quickly grew into a professional pursuit. While I don’t always get as much time these days for those “just for fun” shoots, I still find real joy in helping clients realize their vision through thoughtful, high-quality imagery.
A defining part of my approach is a deep commitment to community education and airspace safety. Many people don’t realize how much regulation governs drone operations, or why those rules exist. I take pride in not only staying compliant but also helping others understand the why behind the standards that keep both pilots and the public safe.
In a field where true professionalism and artistry don’t always overlap, Evansville Aerial aims to be the exception — blending respect for the law, technical skill, and a creative eye to deliver aerial imagery done right.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Early in Evansville Aerial’s journey, I realized that drone photography alone wasn’t enough to sustain the business long-term. Most clients were looking for a complete visual package combining aerial and ground photography, sometimes even video. That insight forced me to pivot from being a drone specialist to becoming a full-service visual media provider.
It meant learning traditional photography, post-production workflows, and client brand storytelling all while maintaining the high standards and safety compliance that set my drone work apart. That pivot not only broadened my skill set but also transformed Evansville Aerial into a more versatile and sustainable business.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A key lesson I had to unlearn was thinking of Evansville Aerial as a B2C business rather than a B2B service provider.
In the early stages, I invested a lot of time into building a strong social media presence and trying to become a recognizable household name…. something more suited for a consumer brand. Over time, I realized that my true audience wasn’t the general public, but other businesses: realtors, developers, marketing teams, and organizations that needed reliable, professional media services.
That shift completely changed how I approached growth. I began focusing less on likes and reach, and more on relationships, referrals, and quality of service. Recognizing that Evansville Aerial’s strength lies in partnership, not mass visibility, and was one of the most valuable mindset pivots I’ve made.
