We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mark Hunter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mark thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
In the sales world, it’s more than just a job for me; it’s a way of life. At The Sales Hunter, my mission is clear: to help others unlock their full potential. While my resume might highlight my expertise in business development, what truly matters is the connections I forge. Engaging with people daily is not just a task but an honor.
My passion for assisting, coaching, and leading has taken me across the globe. Today, as I meet countless faces, I’m grateful for the value I bring to their sales journey. Moving forward, my goal remains simple—to keep supporting and guiding others. The Sales Hunter isn’t just about business; it’s about genuine connections, growth, and being a reliable partner for those striving to reach their goals in sales and beyond.
Mark, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I never intended to work in the sales industry but when the last name on my birth certificate read “Hunter,” a sales career was meant to be.
My journey in sales included multiple sales and leadership roles with three Fortune 500 companies. Those experiences provided the foundation for me to create the name, “The Sales Hunter” more than 20 years ago. That is when I began my lifestyle of consulting, speaking, and writing about sales.
Today, I am humbled by the many faces I meet as I travel the globe. My resumé says I specialize in business development, guiding organizations to find and retain high-quality prospects; however, it really boils down to relationships. I consider it an honor to connect with people each and every day.
My passion for helping, training, and leading others has given me an opportunity to travel the globe. When not on the road, my home is in Omaha with my wife, Ann Marie, who believes in me the most.
Any advice for managing a team?
First of all the manager has to realize they can’t motivate the team, all they can do is create an environment for the members to motivate themselves. High morale is an internal emotion; as a result, people will view things differently based on their background and current situation. This means the manager has to create an environment where each member can see themselves succeeding.
With this said let me share 10 elements necessary in the environment.
1. A leader the team sees is in the game with them willing to help wherever necessary.
2. Accountability exists with each person. Each person accepts being accountable to others and knows along with accountability comes supporting and lifting one another.
3. Goals that are clearly stated with well-defined metrics each person can understand.
4. Regular communication that is free-flowing from the top down and from the bottom up.
5. Respect for each person and acceptance of them without passing judgment.
6. Celebrations both planned and unplanned that recognize individual and team performance.
7. Support with regular training and ongoing coaching to help each person become the best they can be.
8. A level of team pride allows each person to be excited about being part of the organization.
9. An attitude amongst the team that problems will occur but solutions can be developed to deal with the problem by working together.
10. Optimism is on display each day by the leader with an unwavering belief success will be attained.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Referrals from satisfied customers. Without a doubt, this is my #1 source. Referrals don’t always turn into business right away but over time I’ve found this to be not only my #1 source but also the easiest way to grow my business. To make the most of these I reach out to my existing or past customers several times a year to ask for a referral. My best customers don’t just give me one referral they give me multiple people to contact and oftentimes they make the introduction for me.
