We were lucky to catch up with Mark Hartfeld recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mark thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
As a photography enthusiast, I embarked on my journey with humble point-and-shoot cameras. Those early days were filled with curiosity and learning, and that trusty camera accompanied me faithfully for many years. When I decided to turn my passion into a business, I knew it was time to level up. I upgraded to a full-frame DSLR, and that decision marked a turning point in my career.
Equipment matters. It’s the backbone of any successful venture, whether you’re running a company or pursuing your artistic vision. As I opened my studio, I quickly realized that staying competitive meant staying ahead. Other professionals in the industry were constantly evolving, and I needed to keep pace. Business, after all, is about adaptation—meeting the needs of your clients and exceeding their expectations.
In the tech-driven world, this rings even truer. Advancements in equipment are like stepping stones toward success. Whether it’s a sharper lens, a faster processor, or a more versatile lighting setup, each upgrade propels us forward. As a business owner, I understood that profitability wouldn’t come overnight. Since 2017, I’ve been a professional photographer, pouring my heart and resources into this ever-evolving entity I call my business.
Investment is the currency of growth. Tens of thousands of dollars annually go into acquiring the latest gear. But it’s not just about the hardware—it’s about mastering new techniques, staying attuned to industry shifts, and adapting swiftly. Picture it: my studio as a living, breathing organism, fueled by innovation and resilience. It’s what sets me apart from the rest—the ability to capture moments, tell stories, and create art, all while embracing change.
So, fellow photographers, remember this: Your journey isn’t a sprint; it’s a marathon. Invest wisely, learn relentlessly, and let your passion guide you. Because in this ever-changing landscape, growth isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.

Mark, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Title: Capturing Moments, Crafting Art: The Journey of Mark Hartfeld Photography
Greetings, I’m Mark, the proud owner and lead photographer behind Mark Hartfeld Photography. With over 15 years as a photography enthusiast and more than 7 years as a full-time professional, my journey has been one of evolution, passion, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
From Hobbyist to Entrepreneur
My love affair with photography began as a hobby—a way to freeze moments in time, to tell stories through the lens. Little did I know that this passion would transform into a thriving business. Picture this: I was working at a big-box store. My manager, observant and perhaps a touch cheeky, pulled me aside. “Your photography is fantastic,” he said, “and if you don’t leave here and go full-time, I’m going to fire you!” His words were both encouragement and a wake-up call. It was time to turn my hobby into a vocation.
And so, armed with determination I opened my own studio. From that moment on, every click of the shutter became an investment in my future. My passion and my livelihood merged seamlessly.
The Pursuit of Excellence
Quality is my hallmark. Not just for my clients, but for myself. I hold my work to an unwavering standard—one that demands nothing less than excellence. As a photographer, I am my own harshest critic. Each frame, each composition, must meet the threshold of near perfection.
But photography isn’t static; it’s dynamic, ever-evolving. I immerse myself in the craft, studying every nuance. From lighting techniques to post-processing wizardry, I adapt to the shifting landscape. Trends come and go, but the pursuit of mastery remains constant.
A Diverse Portfolio
My lens captures a kaleidoscope of moments. Weddings—the whispered vows, stolen glances, and joyous celebrations. Portraits—the essence of a person frozen in time, their story etched in pixels. Maternity—the anticipation, the miracle of life unfolding. Headshots—the gateway to professional identity. Seniors—the bridge between youth and adulthood. And even real estate—the art of showcasing homes in their best light.
Learning from All Quarters
Photography is a lifelong apprenticeship. I learn from those who’ve tread the path before me, absorbing wisdom from seasoned veterans. But I also glean insights from fresh eyes—the newcomers who challenge conventions and redefine the art. It’s a delicate balance, a dance between tradition and innovation.
In Conclusion
My studio isn’t just a physical space; it’s a canvas where moments become art. I invite you to join me on this visual odyssey—a journey fueled by passion, curiosity, and the relentless pursuit of the perfect shot. Because in the world of Mark Hartfeld Photography, every click is a heartbeat, every frame a story waiting to be told.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
As a seasoned photographer, my most effective strategy for expanding my clientele involves embracing new challenges. I actively explore uncharted territories within photography, seeking out areas I haven’t yet explored. For instance, I’ve recently delved into fashion and runway photography, not only to contribute my skills to that industry but also to foster growth as a business owner.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most efficacious approach for expanding one’s client base involves targeted advertising in emerging markets and diligently establishing a professional presence. This imperative became particularly pronounced when I relocated to a different geographical region, only to recognize the necessity of yet another move in order to enhance service provision to a broader segment of my clientele. Adaptability remains paramount, and at times, this entails strategic relocations to maximize effectiveness.
