Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Ervin

Hi Mark , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?

I founded GreenGro Biologicals in 2009 with Mycorrhizae and beneficial bacteria blends. My education as an archeologiest learning ancient agricultural methods led me to the discovery of “Terra Preta” soils which are found in the Amazonian basin, and are considered some of the most fertile soils in the world. I built upon that philosophy and has expanded the product line to include the highest quality – dry organic fertilizer blends, dry organic soil additives and organic and biological pest controls on the market today.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?

I has not been smooth at all. When I first started it was long days and nights. I would be on the road for weeks at a time. It was me and my car for years driving up and down California trying to get into hydro stored. Perfected my pitch throughout the whole process. Years ago I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) It’s a rare eye condition where I will loose my eyesight fully. I would say I’m about 80% of the way there. I loose all my vision doing the night. It has become harder and harder to to go to work events past a certain time. People would wave from a distance and I wouldn’t see. There was a point where no one knew and everyone just thought I was being a jerk. I miss waves and handshakes all the time. I told the GreenGro community about my condition and my narrative has changed. I just need a little more help than other but at least I am no longer a jackass.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

At GreenGro Biologicals, our mission is to empower gardeners to nurture the soil using ancient methods and modern science so their plants can thrive. Our customers can expect products that are easy to use that provide consistently amazing results.

Just as the ocean is full of life, soil is teeming with a vast array of organisms that thrive on symbiotic relationships. All of our products contain beneficial microorganisms that will nurture these relationships and help your soil flourish, maintaining a living soil system for plants to thrive with less stress on you and the planet.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?

Absolutely. Risk-taking is an integral part of growth, both in business and life. I view risk as a necessary element of innovation—without it, you’re just maintaining the status quo. At GreenGro Biologicals, we’ve taken some major risks, and I’ve been at the forefront of many of them. One of the most significant was our decision to expand into the regenerative soil space. At the time, it was an emerging market, and there was no guarantee it would take off. We invested heavily in R&D and doubled down on educating the community about soil health, even when some in the industry were skeptical.

We also faced challenges when we expanded into international markets. Different regulations, unfamiliar climates, and logistical challenges all posed risks. But it was worth it because we believed in our product and its potential to improve growing practices globally.

For me, risk-taking is about calculated decisions. You don’t jump in blindly—you evaluate the potential reward, the impact it could have on your mission, and then you go for it with a clear plan. I don’t see risk as something to shy away from. If you believe in what you’re doing and have a solid strategy, you can turn that risk into an opportunity for massive growth.

What I’ve learned is that the biggest risks often come with the biggest rewards. But you have to stay committed and flexible enough to pivot if things don’t go exactly as planned. It’s about embracing uncertainty while staying true to your core values.
