We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mark Avery a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mark, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Skills. Time. Resources.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Born and raised in South Carolina, now residing in Las Vegas since 2014, I’ve experienced both sides of life when it comes to the city life and the slow southern lifestyle. Both have pros and cons but the common denominator for me was the realization that in the world of Graphic Design, the opportunitis for me are endless. The introduction for me into the Graphic Design world was a highschool class in the 11th grade and had the opportunity to really focus on my potential, I quickly learned that understanding what people need visually was one of my gifts. Once graduating from the Art Institute of Charleston I took my talents to Las Vegas with nothing but a bag and a BFA degree. For months I slept on my big brothers couch while I attempted figure out a plan for myself in the big city. First thing was first and I knew that no one would take me serious if I didn’t, so I invested time into my brand, AveryCreative, and made sure that my designs were too good to ignore. Soon enough I started to get granted the opportunity with different jobs like creating packing design for companies and working for a few different startups as graphic designer and am currently working the Graphic Design position at popular night club in Las Vegas called Drai’s. Through all the ups and downs in the industry, I’ve learned to always work at attempting what I call the “Trifecta of Succes”; Skills, Resources, and Time. As long as I continued to evolve in each area, I knew that I would be nothing but succesful at what I put my energy into.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In my earlier years in Las Vegas while searching for a job/CEO I happened to land a position as Graphic Designer at Print Shop that handled majority of the UFC’s print jobs. When I was given the position, I was told that I’d recieve a raise after 6 months as long as I did my job succesfully consistently. I did just that and right on the six month mark I had the chance to design the backdrop for UFC fighter that was fighting for a championship that weekend, so my artwork was on ESPN. WOW right?! Coming back to work on Monday, my boss calls me into his office and let’s me know that “The company is going in another direction”. Holding back tears and anger I shake his hand and leave the office. This was the beginning of realizing that everyone has there own agenda and you can only control what you’re in control of. Immediatley I applied to a better position and landed it, I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
For the past two years I’ve been managing a photography/vdeography studio called Red Wall. Alot of the clients that book the space to rent are in the entertainment industry whether they are musical artists, CEO’s, celebrities, models, etc. I’ve been using this as an opportunity to bridge the gap between branding services and the clients. Alot of times the clients don’t have a consistent, high quality Graphic Designer they can call on and know that they will be given top of the line work. It’s almost been effortless after I show them my previous projects and my work speaks for itself.
