We recently connected with Marja Humphrey and have shared our conversation below.
Marja, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
There have been several defining moments in my career. One that stands out was a perceived failure that actually was beneficial. I did not successfully pass a course in graduate school. While it delayed my graduation by an entire year, that year was so productive and full of self-care and joy. I found a job that helped to launch my career in ways I had not anticipated and ultimately this experience provided such clarity for my future.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
A New Jersey native, I am a licensed graduate professional counselor who works with individuals and couples to remove barriers to their ability to live happy, healthy, honest lives. Most of my clients are Black women navigating anxiety, depression, and relational concerns. A lifelong learner and educator, I am also an assistant professor in the School Counseling program at Bowie State University, Maryland’s first HBCU. At Bowie State, I train professional school and mental health counselors for working in urban communities. My research focuses on wellness and leadership. Creativity is an area of focus that I embrace, both inside and outside of the classroom. Using the arts allows for a person’s full expression and exploration. It is also important to acknowledge how one’s faith or spirituality contributes to a meaningful life.
I believe in living life not on default, but with intention. Most friends and colleagues appreciate that I am an avid truth teller. This is what sets me apart from others. In the counseling space or for work projects, I offer a blend of support, encouragement and challenge so that you grow and achieve what you most desire. I am most proud of my former students and clients who have stepped into leadership roles, businesses, and other successful ventures. What I most want potential clients/followers/fans to know is that they will get their return on investment when we collaborate and connect. It’s time to win and win again!
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Yes! Please see the titles below which I have dubbed a “life curriculum” and previously read and discussed with others in community. They have expanded my thinking about myself personally and professionally as well as challenged me to step into the role of an entrepreneur, Beyond these, TEDtalks and podcasts are other great resources.
A Sacred Voice is Calling by John Neafsey
Spiritual Economics by Eric Butterworth
The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist
The Gifts of Imperfection by Brene Brown
Believe Bigger by Marshawn Evans Daniels
Thou Shalt Prosper by Rabbi Daniel Lapin
Rest is Resistance by Tricia Hersey

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Self-awareness and ongoing self-evaluation are imperative as a counselor/therapist and university professor. As we grow, develop, mature and navigate life, self-awareness helps us to ensure we are not missing the lessons we need. Self-evaluation is also important to identify gaps. These gaps are opportunities for more training or an indication of when to consult with others. As a business owner, I would say that consulting with others via mentoring and modeling is what has helped propel me beyond any of my own preconceived ideas. It was an associate who was just a few years beyond me in her career that helped me to understand how I should determine my “hourly rate” and when it was time to increase it based on the value I provide. While we might look to the market to provide a baseline or ballpark figure, it was important for me to consider what unique contribution I make that influences this as well.
