We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marivel Juarez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marivel, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I am a true believer in outsourcing yourself. I believe in multiple streams of income. That is where the saying of “Woman of many hats” from my business came from. Growing up, I was not sure what I wanted to do with my future. I knew one thing was certain- working a 9-5 was not going to make me as successful as I needed to be. I am a single mother, I wanted more, I want a legacy for my daughter to grow and learn that you can be more than a single employee.
To be successful, you need to think outside of the box and take chances.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Mari Bella is a Latina Owned business. I started by customizing Fedora hats. All my hats are made from Mexico quality. That means that the quality of the hats are durable, and authentic. Every hat is a one of a kind hat. We want women and men to be able to upgrade their look by accessorizing with a statement hat.
I added apparel to my boutique shortly after. I focus on bringing more sexiness to my boutique. As a mother myself, I know there is a “look” of how a mom should look. I agree that mothers should be more conservative, however, there is nothing wrong with putting on a outfit that makes you feel like a woman than a mother. Our apparel offers, brunch outfits and night outfits. Who says a mom can’t be sexy?
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Before and at the beginning of starting my boutique. MANY times the thought of shutting it down came to my mind. The thought of embarrassment, disappointment, & financial loss came to my mind. There were days I wanted to let everyone know, there were days I wanted to just take down my instagram and be done with it. All of this because I was afraid of failing. I was afraid that my friends, peers would see me fail and laugh. Then I had to remind myself “you got this”. I had to post (even when I did not get a lot of likes), Keep reposting, keep marketing. Although, I am still growing and have not peaked, I have more sales than I did when I started, I have more followers than before. I had to unlearn that this is my story not social media, it was my business not fear.
I reached out to companies, I got my hats in a coffee shop which bring in a lot of customers. I joined the Pop up shop at the Galleria Mall, which is surrounded by amazing women who empower and support one another. This has been an eye opener and has reminded me to continue supporting every small business like myself.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
1. partnering up with other companies to get infront of the right audience. 2. Social media. Grow your audience online and market
3. Participate in pop up markets to get your brand out to the public.
Most importantly, No one knows about your business if you do not talk about it!
