Maritza, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be driven and have the motivation regardless of what’s thrown at you. Reduce the number of outside influences that are meant to derail you.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I got into the Makeup industry because my whole family is in the industry. My mom did braids when I was younger and my older sisters were into fashion and makeup. I loved it all and did not choose from just one industry to be excellent in. I got into the photographer industry because I had a photographer who has been in the industry for over 25yrs take my money and run. From then on, I decided to learn how to edit and study photography. Once I felt confident, I purchased my first camera, a Nikon D3500. I struggled and did a lot of practice shots. I continued with my starter camera for the first 3 years until I purchased my 2nd camera, a Nikon Z6. The new camera opened up a whole world of art. I expanded and decided to take on Los Angeles Fashion Week which was extremely tough. You must know lighting techniques in and out to get great shots working this event.
I also became a wardrobe stylist due to an event for models I planned and the stylist never showed. All the unfortunate experiences that I’ve had in my career ultimately made me a powerhouse. I am a one-stop-shop for my clients. I provide photography, makeup & hairstyling, and wardrobe styling services. My goal is to see a smile on all the client’s faces once they see the end product. If my clients do not like the end product, I will do another shoot free of charge or give them their money back. Thankfully, I’ve only had to do this once in my career. I strive to satisfy each client and potential clients that crosses my path.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I thought that inviting individuals in the industry to my personal pages for networking would help me learn when in fact, it did the exact opposite. You must be careful and mindful of who’s out there who’ll potentially sabotage your business just from jealousy or if you didn’t see eye to eye with someone.
I had someone whom I did not work with or even know personally, going behind each post I made to network with other artists in the industry and making very hateful comments about me on each post I made. Less is more in this industry. I would suggest only bringing people who you’ve met or actually have worked with to your personal pages.
