We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maritza Lisa a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Maritza, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I’d say I’m primarily self-taught. Online tutorials and classes have also been helpful resources. Looking back, having a mentor or focusing on targeted practice in specific areas might have accelerated my learning.
A willingness to learn is essential, and being adaptable to new technologies like digital tools. Most importantly, self-motivation and discipline are key ingredients to move forward in finding and evolving your creative voice.
Challenges? Definitely navigating the learning curve without formal education, and sometimes finding the time to create consistently.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am an illustrator and surface designer. My focus? Stylized portraits of women of color, blooming florals, and playful patterns. Pastel palettes and bold pops of color reflect my Caribbean upbringing, surrounded by strong, beautiful women. Embracing digital tools, I share my unique perspective on beauty and representation through unapologetically feminine illustrations.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is the constant evolution. Embracing digital tools like the iPad and Apple Pencil opened a whole new creative dimension for me. It allows me to refine my style, explore new ideas, and ultimately share my ever-evolving perspective on what beauty means.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my view, fostering a more inclusive and diverse art scene is crucial. Art thrives on a variety of perspectives, so ensuring artists of color, women, and other underrepresented voices have platforms and opportunities to showcase their work is essential.
As an artist who uses digital tools, I also believe in promoting accessibility to technology and training for creatives. This can help break down barriers and open doors for more people to explore their artistic potential.
