We recently connected with Maritza Bollain y Goytia and have shared our conversation below.
Maritza, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I always knew that my role was to support other people through healthcare. At a young age, I claimed that I would become a doctor although at the time I aspired to become a Western Medical Doctor (MD). I completed my pre-med studies and bachelor’s in biology at The University of Chicago where I also began working at a Clinical Neuroscience and Psychopharmacology Research Unit. It was during this time that I gained the first hand awareness of big pharma’s role in healthcare and immediately began my quest for holistic medicine. I quickly realized during my short lived time that the interest of pharmaceutical research was profit and not to address the root cause of mental health (or any health concerns). This was the greatest pivot that led to my trajectory in life offering an integrative health practice outside of the allopathic medical model.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine providing all aspects of East Asian Medicine including acupuncture, cupping, herbal medicine, nutritional therapy, qi-gong and moxibustion. I specialize in Mental Health providing East Asian Medicine treatment alongside Integrative Psychology and Functional Medicine approaches. The Integrative Psychology techniques include Brainspotting Therapy, Hypnosis, Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) as well as Somatic Trauma work. I also offer Functional Lab-Work in which treatment is supplement and botanical based.
My practice is rooted in a multi-modal approach as we are multi-dimensional beings. Optimal health is the maximum expression of the multi-layered self in resonance with the governing patterns of the natural world. Imbalances expressed in health are merely expressions of a survival adaptation. In observing these expressions with compassion, we unwind the story of the tissues, release survival mechanisms, restore harmonic physiology and expand resilience. Through mindful internal investigation, we acquire awareness of the choices we are making that are leading to limiting expressions in our health shifting one from a survival state into a thriving state.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Acknowledging everyone’s humanness. Witnessing the full range of human emotions without judgment. Recognizing the fundamental needs of being seen, heard and understood. Doing everything in my capacity to create a container of safety.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The commitment to my inner work and expansion of knowledge. Acknowledging when I do not know the answer to a patient’s question and educating myself on information and resources for each individual’s unique experience.
