We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marita Karpetta. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marita below.
Marita, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
Since I was a kid i always wanted to become an actress and be in movies. I always had this vision and I cannot imagine myself doing anything different in my life.
As I am growing up, realising and seeing how things are in a more realistic perspective, sometimes I do wish that I had a different goal like something more regular as my life would be easier.
On the other hand I am very happy and proud that I am a creative individual with dreams and Im thinking that life is difficult anyways, so when you are an artist life is much more interesting and unique, you just create anything and when you create life is enjoyable.
As artists in general though, there is always the struggle with having a stable job or income, or you sometimes have to face or go through weird stuff as the industry is not exactly the most safe industry. I am also thinking of this sometimes as I heard that the acting industry in places such as US or some even UK is huge and very weird stuff can happen.
Also for me specifically it is very difficult that I was born as an artist because I live in Cyprus island, very far from the big countries with the big opportunities, in Cyprus there are only business opportunities or forex companies which is nothing close to creative.
So all my family and loved ones are here, and for me to succeed in the industry I choose to, I have to leave very far which is something very difficult for me to do. So in this case I also think that if I was not an artist it would be easier to find something in my country and stay to grow with my family. So yeah seems like being an artist especially outside of the UK/US is quite hard.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So I hold a professional diploma on Stage and Screen Acting and I graduated in Acting Coach Scotland, Glasgow. After I finished the course, I came back to Cyprus and got a job as an Actress/Video Specialist in a multi-million views Youtube Channel called La La Life Games where I had the character of a teenager called Grace. This was a dream job, I met some incredible and very creative people and learned so many stuff about production, management, organisation, directing, script writing and even camera operation a bit. As an actress there I was responsible for all the aspects of the video creation – had to research for trends as our content was based on comedy and trends, had to write scripts and find ideas, had to organise and make a schedule for the video, find the props, direct the video and many more tasks.
After 2 years I decided to leave the company as I saw that views were dropping and things within the company were changing not in a good way, lot of poor management and poor communication between producers.
After I left I did not find any other creative opportunity in my town, and since I needed money I got a job as a Brand Manager in an Affiliate Marketing company for the Financial Industry, which I am currently still there. It is nothing creative and it is a huge challenge for me to do everyday something I do not love and changed direction, so I am thinking to go back to the creative direction again because life is too short to do something I dont enjoy just for a salary.
Also I keep doing my creative stuff on the outside and I participate in music clips and short films. Something I am very proud of this year I managed to get my first award as the Best Female Model in the Cyprus Fashion Film Festival which was unexpected, but I am very happy I achieved that this year.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I am trying to grow an audience in Tiktok and Instagram platforms at the moment. How I get my audience and from what I know from the experience I have in one of the largest online media companies is that you have to follow the market and follow the trends but not copy anyone, just you have to get the idea and recreate it in your own way. Also be authentic, do not copy other creators or pretend someone you are not for the videos, just be yourself and be creative to create unique content.
As an actor, share reels and share interesting posts about the life as an actor. Creative unique posts or videos are always catching attention, which is what I try to do.
Also something very important is consistency, post regularly and often, be present in your social media it really works.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Lately I have read ”The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho, and it really changed my mindset it is an amazing book portraying a story about following one’s dream to find the purpose of life. It is about a shepherd who leaves his country to find his treasure in Egypt, and it describes its journey, what he is facing, the challenges the doubt, the struggle of needing a salary to get some money to survive and continue, which is something very relatable at least to me. But it shows the story in a philosophical and more spiritual way, and the main lesson is to follow your dreams and your destiny which you realise through the signs and visions that nature sends to you, which only you see and understand.
