We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marita Hill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marita, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
If you go to a bookstore or a library you’ll see at least one full shelf dedicated to books written about how to lead a successful life. Most of these publications point to one common goal in the pursuit of success- happiness and satisfaction. People want to be satisfied with how much money they’re making. Happy with the family they’ve created. Satisfied with their overall contribution to themselves and the world.
Success, in so many ways, is the manifestation of these dreams. I believe there is no end point or destination to success. Its correlation to us, individually, changes and evolves year after year. Success is intersectional and equitable. The baby that has just learned how to turn over is just as successful as the adult who has finally moved into their first apartment.
Having contentment with where you are, knowing you’ve given your all is true success. When we look at success moment by moment, we find many wins. Sometimes breathing, taking our medication today, washing our face this morning, or feeding our families is all the success we can muster.
Over time my goals have changed, and what I have accomplished in life has grown. I’ve noticed with age, I naturally feel like a more successful person. This isn’t just due to natural career or family progression, but because I am grateful for every big and small step I take toward being authentic and happy. “Success” is so fluid, that we can define it for ourselves as often as we like. Success is its own energy, its own spirit. We see it in every career field and walk of life. It moves to the beat of its own drum and will not be boxed into one version of itself. I hope to be just as malleable and free as I journey through life.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Psychic Marita LLC was born out of a need to find passion in my life. During 2017 and 2018 I was in pretty challenging place physically and spiritually. I had recently experienced overcoming a domestically violent relationship, decided to unenroll from college, and was working mainly “temp service” opportunities. I had no immediate plans for the future and was battling my own apathetic feelings.
I grew up Christian, but had an interest in all things esoteric and spiritual as a child. As a young adult, I got into Law of Attraction and tarot through classes and firsthand experience. However, while I was battling my apathetic season, I felt no real connection to my faith and my spiritual experiences like I had previously. I spent many weeks going through the motions of 50+ hour work weeks just to fill the void.
It was after a few months of me lifelessly living, that I had a very profound dream. In this dream, a very tall man told me that it didn’t matter what I did in life, as long as it involved spirituality. This unknown man in my dreams said I could be any religion or denomination I wanted. Just to remember, the key to my success would be in my spirituality.
For some reason, this dream really touched me. I’ve always been a dreamer, but this one was special. It lit a fire in my spirit. So from that point on I began brainstorming the many ways I could become involved in spiritual entrepreneurship. I had gone to many entrepreneurship camps in my teens and knew some basics on how to write a business plan and put myself out there.
I would imagine myself running a new-age crystal shop or selling handmade candles. I’d write out plans for these ideas, but none really felt like they truly resonated with me. This went on for several months. I became frustrated with myself. I thought my success was tied to how much money I could make with this unknown “spiritual job” and how quickly I could get it accomplished. I had other things on my plate as well, adding to the pressure. I’ve learned that progression isn’t always linear or quick.
Eventually, I changed how I was approaching my thoughts toward career. I began saying to myself that I actually did know my life’s purpose and the business I needed to create. Over time this led me to begin “Full Moon Manifestation ATL” in 2019. I would set up under the full moon and teach others about what I learned through manifestation and Law of Attraction. After a few months I progressed to practicing tarot and cartomancy readings for others. I felt such an instant love for teaching and readings. I knew this was the direction to head in.
It’s been four years since I began pursuing being a spiritual entrepreneur full-time. I have had many wild experiences on this journey, but have loved every moment. I feel so comfortable relating to my clients because of my own personal life challenges. I’ve read an innumerable amount of books on spirituality, numerology, tarot, angels, mediumship, and more. Because I have been engaging with the spiritual world since I was a child, I feel like becoming a psychic reader and entertainer is second nature for me. I merge personal wisdom with time tested knowledge to provide my clients with solutions in my readings. We don’t just talk about what’s going on, but ways to improve things. Many clients don’t know what to ask in readings, or where to begin – and that’s okay! I take the time to nurture a safe environment for my clients to get the knowledge they need through tarot and mediumship. I see myself as an interpreter for the “Other Side” in my readings. Through diligent work, intention, and God I have found what works for me.
Five years ago, I was only imagining the life I am living now. By no means have I reached my highest potential, but I am grateful for where I am today. Creating a life where I work on my own time, where I contribute to the world, and where I get to do something unique is a dream come true. Nothing has been overnight, but I feel I have made leaps and bounds.
I’m more recently proud to have created my own oracle deck called the Divine Manifestation Oracle Deck. It has thirty cards and comes with a booklet authored by me. Using manifestation techniques and the Law of Attraction has truly transformed my life over time, so I created a deck that centers around these concepts. This is my first publication, and I can’t wait to create more decks.
While I learn more about creating decks and booklets, I continue building upon my current offerings. I enjoy individual readings with my clients; in-person, on the phone, and on Zoom. Also, it’s always a pleasure providing psychic entertainment at events. There’s never a dull moment when there’s a group! I’m still exploring building my pet and numerology reading offerings as well.
Some days, I feel as if I’m still floating aimlessly. Even for a “psychic” the future can be fluid, unpredictable, and unknown. Regardless, I’m excited to see what’s in the cards for me next.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Funding your business takes creativity and a lot of will power! I was struggling to start a business when I was thinking inside the box. I was thinking I needed to open a store front and a host of other things, which would have required a healthy amount of money.
Instead, when I scaled down and pivoted back to a past hobby (tarot reading) I found an idea with less overhead. At first, I didn’t even buy new tarot cards. I found an old unused card deck lying around my mother’s house and looked up how to do divination/readings with them. I began practicing on myself. Eventually I asked co-workers if they’d let me practice with them.
This led to coworkers being kind enough to pay me $5 or so per reading. I then “invested” in a tarot deck and began practicing with that. Eventually, I used money from my full-time job to buy basic vending supplies such as a table, table clothes, props, and more. From there, I used twenty dollars or so to run a few Instagram ads for reading specials and to get my business out there. I progressed to investing in affordable vending opportunities. I believe by exploring various streams of income within one niche, you can find many money making opportunities.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
Staying consistent with how clients can find you is so important. Sometimes people get stuck on which particular platform is the most successful instead of just building the platform that resonates with them the most.
I’ve managed to keep in touch with clients by keeping the same work number, Instagram handle, web address and email. Often clients will lose your business card or lose track of the next event you’ll be at. But because of technology, people can find a text thread where you listed your prices from two years ago – in five seconds. They can search a key word from an email inquiry they sent a few months ago. This allows clients to know they can easily communicate with a business via call, text, DM or email at any point in the future. It’s simple yet effective!
I also believe that fostering brand loyalty comes with being authentic. When I am my truest self, I attract clientele who will most resonate with who I am and receive the best messages possible. This is naturally builds loyal clientele. Also knowing my target audience has helped a lot. I’ve learned more about this by continuing to attend classes and workshops related to business. Additionally, focusing more on maintaining overall good customer care and business practices assists.
