Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marissa Zapata. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Marissa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I had been struggling for months trying to come up with a name for my business because I didn’t want to just use my name. I remember an exercise when I was in cosmetology school where we had to come up with a salon concept, business plan and name and none of those ideas worked either. Until one day I was sitting in church on Mother’s Day a few years back and the First Lady of our church spoke. The sermon was talking about how motherhood was just a “beautiful chaos,” and seeing how I’m a single mother of 3 teenage girls, it was a perfect fit.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a second generation American/Texan, Austin native. After working in the medical field for a decade or so, during a separation from my ex-husband, I enrolled in a cosmetology program. I’ve been formally a licensed cosmetologist going on 8 years but in the industry for 10 years. Recently, lasts last year and the beginning of this year, I attended barber school and am shy 10 hours of completion. I wanted to add to my licensing even after already doing mens hair.
Since my last interview, I’ve become a somewhat successful Brazilian Blowout Certified hairstylist, doubled my revenue and clientele, even during a pandemic and I feel that I’ve got a hang of this entrepreneurial thing (wink, wink)
I feel like staying humble, having strong faith and staying educated in new trends and products have a huge impact on how to be successful.
I’m truly thankful for all my clients, friends/family and church family that have helped me along this journey.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
My clients become like my family. I ask questions and take notes, sometimes their answers don’t need writing down. I feel like every person in my chair is not there by accident. I feel like being genuine and truly caring to your clients or customers is the best way. Honest is the best policy. The experience in my salon is about the person in my chair not ever about me.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
COVID….need I say more? I have been very fortunate to stay afloat during a time when small businesses went under..
Once we were able to return to work, I personally reached out to each client past and present to let them know I was in business and if there were any special accommodations that I could make I would, in order to have them back in my chair.
Personally, I think having the drive to not fail and the lack of funds in my savings (cost of living and not working during lockdown) with my girls to feed and provide for, helped me to Persevere.
