We were lucky to catch up with Marissa Savino recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marissa , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
Before introducing the world to my business MJs Hip Hop Connes I was in the field of Social Work. While employed at a drug and alcohol program a few of the clients referred to me as MJ. I’m not so much a Marvel fan so I didn’t make the correlation until it was shared with me. The name stuck and actually ideal to use for the industry. Hip Hop Connex derives from my experience to connect artists and help them navigate toward progression and success. MJs Hip Hop Connex connects the dots from radio to media and press to social media management, to marketing, etc. Services I am not able to provide, I connect artists to my business partners.
Marissa , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
MJs Hip Hop Connex came to fruition about a decade ago. Writing, music, and helping others is my niche as well as a passion. I began blogging for some sites and writing for a few magazines and landed an interview with Rampage (Flipmode Squad). The interview was buzzing and soon after indie artists reached out to me to conduct interviews on them to promote some of their projects. This opened the door for me to host a radio show in Philly, which opened more doors. I continued to interview classic Hip Hop legends and went full throttle into blogging and writing until my name was recognized and respected. From there I began social media marketing and management, booking radio interviews, offering press releases, etc. I planted myself in the industry and networked and built relationships daily with radio stations, DJs, magazines, blogs, labels, and other outlets. From that foundation, MJs Hip Hop Connex was birthed.
As a publicist, I’ve had the opportunity to do interviews and work with some of Hip Hop’s greatest including Billy Danze, Rampage, Dres, Yo-Yo, Doodlebug, Fredro Starr, Special Ed, Arrested Development, and more.
MJs Hip Hop Connex doesn’t only rely on the tech world, although it is a huge portion, I take pride in using boots to the streets method for success as well. I provide artist development which there’s a lack of in the industry. I provide in-depth consultations to discuss the ideal way to invest their dollars as well as expectations and goals. It is key to know the artist you are working with not just musically but grasp onto other talents as well. This is essential to keep artists/entertainers consistently in the public eye and to create and expand a fanbase.
Like anything professional or personal, challenges do exist. What I find challenging is an artist who is not willing to accept guidance or any artistic development.
With MJs Hip Hop Connex you are provided with wrap-around services from a simple bio to billboards around the world, from internet radio to FM spins, from The Source to BET….
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Networking and building relationships daily are crucial in this industry, nationally and internationally. Like any business, I have plastered my logo at venues, clubs, local businesses, hot spots, etc. I’ve used email blasts to introduce myself and MJs Hip Hop Connex to the world, I’ve reached out to major music execs, managers, promoters, and labels to ensure my logo and name were embedded. I connected with up-and-coming artists to make them aware of the services I offer, and have made sure my packages are suitable for all budgets. MJs Hip Hop Connex now runs by word of mouth which speaks volumes about my reputation.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Not all money is all good money…There are professionals in the music and entertainment industries that only want to collect coins and dollars at anyone’s expense. On the flip side, there are also artists who assume recording a song is where their work ends. I’ve had experiences with both…
