We recently connected with Marissa Reich and have shared our conversation below.
Marissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I have owned my own business for over a decade. And it has allowed me to be very present with my children. Because I make my own work hours, I can show up for everything with them. The downside, is the financial impact. If I take a vacation, I don’t get paid. If I don’t work, I don’t get paid. If I’m sick, I don’t get paid if my kids are sick I don’t get paid. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have a regular job with a steady paycheck. But then I look at my kids and I realize they will be leaving the nest soon enough. And I’m very grateful that I get to spend this time with them.
Marissa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started in the beauty industry right out of high school. I studied, make up and was a make up artist for film and television. The hours were a little crazy for me, as I wanted to start a family. So I pivoted and went into aesthetics. I became a licensed aesthetician in 2004. Originally I worked at a pretty well-known spa in Los Angeles. I worked there for about five years until I developed eczema from the products they use. I ended up quitting that job and working at an all natural skin care store in Hollywood. I was the only aesthetician there for the first 5 years. It is called Greenline Beauty and I’m still there on an appointment only basis for my clients. I started what is now called Figo Beauty a little over 10 years ago. It started off as facials and waxing. Now I do more in depth facials and radio frequency, derma, planing, and about four years ago, I added permanent make up to the menu. I specialize in eyebrows. I love to help people find natural alternatives to injectables. I like to recommend natural products and keeping a monthly maintenance facial protocol. I firmly believe that with proper facial techniques, and a great home care routine, as well as nourishing your body properly, you can achieve amazing results for your skin. I started doing eyebrow tattoos because I noticed how many of my clients were losing eyebrow hair over the years. Either from over plucking or just hormonal imbalances. Eyebrows really help to shape the face. When your eyebrows look great, you look great. I wanted to be able to offer this service to help people feel their best, aesthetically. I also do sailing removal. I am a certified Botched Ink technician. It’s an amazing product, that helps to lighten and left unwanted pigment from having permanent make up procedures done.
I’m always trying to learn new things and continue my education. And I love what I do!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
So I am not very good at social media, in my opinion. I don’t have a ton of followers. But the followers I do have are real, and I have earned them. I try to be consistent with posting, but sometimes life gets in the way. I remember the first time a stranger reached out to me to get their eyebrows done. I had just set up my online booking and up until then most of my bookings were word of mouth from people that I know. This woman contacted me and booked a session with me through Instagram. From my postings. She said that she had been looking for an artist to do her brows for a couple of years, and she saw my work, and made the appointment right away. This made me cry with tears of joy. I felt so honored that she trusted me with her brows. And so grateful that she found me on Instagram.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I am old school. I reach out to all of my clients via text. I have found that it works better than email for me. I offer free treatments or big discounts for referrals. Since I have such a big range of prices for my services, I don’t have a one size fits all approach to loyalty program. But I do offer rewards for people who send me new clients. I am always so grateful when my clients prefer me. I feel like that is such a huge gift and compliment.
