We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marissa Middleton a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, what do you think about family businesses? Would you want your children or other family members to one day join your business?
As a family owned and family run business, we run it to certain situations that many people do not face on a regular basis. We work hard as a unit to overcome any obstacle, because at the end of the day it comes down to us. We do not have anyone else to shoulder burdens or conflicts. We each have our strengths and weakness but we are always communicating and staying on the same page with every decision to make the best choices for our business and customers alike
Marissa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started baking when I was in the 5th grade. It was always something that I had a passion for. Since then I have been working on my craft at home and for fun while gaining 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry. Since my family and I took over Simply Frosted in May of 2020 we have broken in the Wedding side of the bakery industry. In 2022 we successfully completed 107 weddings and for 2023 we have already booked 101 weddings! Its has been very challenging but so rewarding. We do our fair share of birthday, anniversary, and special occasion custom orders, but we have really found a love of weddings. Being a small local family owned business we feel like we can provide a more personal experience of any custom order or wedding. I personally meet with every order for quotes all the way through pick up or delivery of the order. We love our customers and make sure to exceed expectations and customer service standards everyday. We love what we do and we feel like you can taste that in our product and with every customer interaction.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The very first month we took over the bakery was the first month of the Covid shutdown. We had so many obstacles to overcome in our first year that many established businesses didn’t survive. We utilized our Cupcake cruiser, which is our dessert food truck, to go out to neighborhoods during the shutdown, as well as offered curbside service at our store front. It was an extremally challenging time but we worked hard and took all the opportunities offered to us during that time. Not only were we able to survive but it made us thrive.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
We make all of our product in house. We make everything from cupcakes, our custom flavors of buttercream, cookies, cake pops, and even come up with all of our own menu and fun seasonal flavors. We change flavors on the first of every month. For example in November, we offer a Sweet Potato Pie, and Apple pie cupcakes.
