Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa McCurtain.
Hi Marissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
With a love for aesthetics and time management I have always been drawn to creating order and beauty! My family often reminds me that as a child I would rearrange furniture in their homes, create seating charts for holidays as well as timelines and shopping lists for vacations, so when I was exploring careers I had a very natural inclination for event design and management. This industry provided a space for creativity in a visual and logistical capacity which are equal peak interests for me. I also had the example of self employment from both my father and grandfather so the idea of being able to create my own schedule and work from home could not have been more appealing. Six years in to owning and operating Cultivate Event Planning I am more certain than ever that this job was meant for me and I meant for it! I love what I do and continue to learn every single day as I meet new clients and get to walk along side them during the biggest celebrations of their life!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As anything in life worth having, it hasn’t come easy. Some of the biggest struggles I’ve met along the way are deciding whether or not to spend or save during times of feast and famine. Making the right investments in inventory, marketing, or simply paying myself comes with a great risk when the work load slows down. It is hard to balance the narrative that I am not my business and the change of cash flow from one season to the next does not have to alter my ability to pay personal bills. My goal was to beat the statistic of businesses that close within the first 5 years and after crossing that milestone it is important to me to have balance in my work flow. Now it is important for my business to not just survive, but to thrive!
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Cultivate Event Planning Inc.?
Cultivate Event Planning is a small business that specializes in event design, logistics coordination, event management, staffing services, and decorating. We work as personal assistants to our clients as their needs are individualized. Each package is custom built for the event’s needs and we pride ourselves on being flexible toward the clients expectations. As each client is unique so are their events and assistance needs, so having a clear understanding of what services are wanted and being flexible to adjustments along the way is a vital part of this role. We want to be known as a company that brings peace into chaos and joy where anxiety is often present.
How do you define success?
Success, at this point in my life, is to be of service to others without being self-sacrificial. Sometimes I still fail to stand up for myself when not being respected, but what good is having a definition of success without room for growth? Some days I succeed, and others I strive for success!
