We recently connected with Marissa Kaye and have shared our conversation below.
Marissa, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I have had so many opportunities to work with my favorite band, Muna, their kindness and willingness to let me create with them is so beyond what anyone has ever done for me. Recently I got to photograph all of their performances at SXSW and tag along with them for a few days, I have never felt so appreciated and validated by an artist before so them just loving me the way I love them is more than I could have ever imagined.

Marissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into music photography by accident, I was given a photo pass for a show one day so I borrowed a camera and that was it, I completely fell in love and have been photographing live music for almost 7 years now. I am very proud of how far I’ve come and the opportunities that I have and I really believe that it comes from my absolute love and passion for music, I think it shows in my work how it’s not just a job for me.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think that being in the music industry for more than a few years is a huge testament to my resiliency. This industry is TOUGH, and very unrewarding for a very long time, but once you stick it out it’s so beautiful and really worth all of the hard work and years of struggle to get there.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
This year specifically, I really had to make the conscious decision to only work with artists that I feel truly respect my work wholeheartedly and that took me seriously as an artist. I was taking so many opportunities just because I was scared they wouldn’t come along anymore and it led to being taken advantage of and not taken seriously so just making the decision to work with artists that treated me how I deserved has made all the difference so far.
