We were lucky to catch up with Marissa Garcia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marissa, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
In order to be successful both in your personal life and your career, you have to make sure that you set goals for what you want to pursue and accomplish as well as being prepared for what obstacles that you will have to face along that path to success, and most of all, be willing to take on challenges and uncover that adventurous side in you. Cause with my career as a filmmaker, it’s like going on adventures, and during those adventures, you get to tell stories that no one that has ever heard of before, demonstrate the use of your filming skills and creativity, and you also learn about and build special connections with the people that you come across and work with in the entertainment and media industry.
No matter how you work in the filming industry, whether you’re a P.A.-(Production Assistant), Director, Producer, Actor/Actress, Voice Actor/Actress, or have some type of engineering or editing job, having a career in filming takes a lot of skill and practice, but most of all it take a lot patience, especially if you’re somebody like me who suffers with a disability. Everybody is going to have struggles in their careers, nobody’s gonna’s be perfect even from the first impressions, but you also have to give chances for those who really need it the most. Disability or not, everybody and anybody has the chance to be successful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
The first time I got into the film industry, was right after I graduated from high school. My journey began when I started attending the film and media school Options for All where I discovered my talent and skills for audio and video editing; over the years during my career as well as today, I have helped work on multiple short films and feature films and have developed more experience with my craft as I became more involved in other future works. Since most of the films that I’ve worked on involved cast and crew members with physical and mental disabilities, it’s nice to work with people that have so much potential and have overcome a lot in their lifetime, but there are times that it can be struggle, I have met and developed friendships with individuals on the Autism spectrum like myself, people with Down syndrome, Epilepsy, you name it, and having to come to their aid to see what problems they have and what I can do to help out when working on a film set.
I’m very proud of being able to show people my skills and how much I have accomplished despite my personal struggles during my education into becoming a professional film maker.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My main goal is to one day open up my own production company for all types of films and tv shows, both animated and live-action, it’s gonna have it all; since I’m also interested in anime-(Japanese cartoons) I also plan to create my own anime shows and movies that can be viewed on public tv and even be put on streaming services, like Crunchyroll, Funimation, Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, etc.
Because of my 4 year experience with working on audio and video engineering, I also have ambitions to become a voice actress as well as a director and maybe even a producer.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I would say the most rewarding aspect of being an artist in filming is the recognition of who you are by the public eye and knowing how much you’ve attained with the people that you work with. Cause when you start showing your true colors and what you’re really made out to become, those colors are gonna start flying, and your wings of greatness will make you soar.
