We were lucky to catch up with Marissa Carrillo recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you get your first job in the field that you practice in today?
My very first job right after graduating esthetician school was at a chain spa, massage envy. I always knew I eventually wanted to branch off and start my Own business but I needed to first get some experience under my belt. I learned so much by working for them. Being in a busy spa meant working on all different skin types through out the day. I quickly learned how to customize each facial based on all sorts of different skin types and conditions. It became second hand nature to just know what to do for each client. It also taught me how to be vigilant with my sanitation and disinfecting process because it was such a strict spa. I carried those healthy habits with me into my business.
Marissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Ever since I was a teenager I had a liking to skincare. I remember making my own little cocktails of masks by finding whatever ingredients I could from my kitchen cabinet. Now, those ingredients I use to use would probably make me cringe. I think Those were the first memories i have in realizing I love skincare. In my younger 20’s I was a bartender and at 24 i decided to finally enroll in esthetician school. I would bartend from 7pm to 3 am and go to school from 8 am – 5pm 6 days a week. Tired was an understatement but I was motivated to graduate. I graduated as one of the top estheticians of my class in 2016.
After graduating, I worked for a chain spa for almost 2 years and then I gave birth to my son. In 2019, When he was only a year old I decided to open up my own business. Looking back , I really can’t believe I decided to go all in on a business while being so busy with a 1 year old baby but I knew I was passionate about my career and I would stop at nothing till I was successful for me and my son.
The first 2 years were a little rough, especially when covid hit but thankfully we all came back from the pandemic and my business was doing well. I think what my clients really love is how I intertwine treatment and a zenful experience in one. I believe you can have all of the massages and yummy smelling masks while also getting a treatment that provides results.
As my education in the industry grew, I found myself to be more in love with the acne side of the esthetic world. I became an acne specialist with face reality in 2022. It took my knowledge of acne to another level and was the best investment I’ve made yet for the business. With my acne bootcamp program, I have a 90% success rate in being able to control your acne within 4-6 months. I would say now a majority of my clients struggle with acne. It is so rewarding being able to help guide them in clearing their skin. A lot of the times they come in feeling defeated and mentally drained from struggling with acne for so many years . I take each and every clients personal story to heart. Seeing their confidence grow throughout the process is so heartwarming. I couldn’t have picked a better niche in my career. Of course I perform all sorts of different facials but my acne bootcamp program has to be the most rewarding.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The biggest lesson I had to unlearn is having to fit in to the idustry. I spent so much of my time comparing myself to other estheticians, making sure my online presence was up to par and on brand. In reality, my clients didn’t care about that social media stuff. They loved me and my work spoke for itself. No one is you, and that is your superpower.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
If I could go back in time I would just choose to go to esthetician school as soon as I a graduated highschool. It was truly the best decision I had ever made.
