We recently connected with Marissa Anderson and have shared our conversation below.
Marissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success takes consistency, hard work, and dedication every day. When I started my business, many people I would talk to about the company didn’t believe it was sustainable. The career coaching and resume writing industry is worth over $15 billion annually.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Marissa, and I am self-made professional resume writer and career coach.
I always received compliments from interviewers on my resume whenever I searched for jobs. So, I started creating resumes as a hobby helping friends and family when needed. I have always enjoyed writing and creating documents. In October 2017, a co-worker suggested that I should sell resumes on a larger scale because I helped others around me land good jobs. So, that day, I made a post on Facebook offering free resume reviews. I received an overwhelming response from my network, and as of January of 2018, I started offering resume updates on social media and performing workshops and webinars on resume best practices, and in 2020 I added career coaching.
Our philosophy is that we help jobseekers land dream jobs with a professional resume, by taking away the confusion in writing. I Like calling myself an employment concierge. As of 2022, I’ve helped over 1000 jobseekers and assisted with over $1m in salary increases.
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I was working full time at a health insurance call center when I started my business, I worked full time for another 2 years till life abruptly changed. I always knew I wanted to write resumes full time, but I didn’t know if I could afford to do it or how I would generate enough clients to manage without the back up of a full-time job, however in 2019 I found out I was pregnant with my daughter Penelope and started my plan to exit Corporate America after her birth. Well Penelope to arrived into the world at 26 weeks gestation in October of 2019, and I was faced with the option of going back to work or staying next to my daughter during her what turned into 67 days in the hospital and figuring out how to survive. The next day after having my daughter, I started writing resumes from my hospital bed and promoting my business heavy on social. I was determined and had tunnel vision; I wasn’t going back to work.
2020 hit and the pandemic shut down the world. I didn’t make a single dollar from March 2020 till May 2020, then so many people were unemployed, and I started to see my business grow rapidly, and my sales doubled from the year before. I also started using more videos, reels and posting consistently on social media. I started following other influencers, studying how to grow my following and focusing on my niche. I also focused on becoming a better writer, and the business grew to what it is today.
In 2022, we hired our first employee and contract writers to assist with projects. We will also hit five years in business in November 2022.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Our philosophy is that we help jobseekers land dream jobs with a professional resume, by taking away the confusion in writing. I Like calling myself an employment concierge. What sets us apart from the rest is building relationships with our clients. As the owner, I work directly with every client. We answer all DM’s (direct messages from social platforms) and Emails. Our clients will always talk to humans when they call us, and we make time to speak with our clients when requested. Typical clients use our services at least twice in a two-year period and refer us to family. We pride ourselves on supporting our clients in a full circle manner.
