We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marisol Gramlich a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marisol, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the story behind how you got your first job in field that you currently practice in.
I went a more unconventional way when I was ready to go into my field. Most newly certified personal trainers start their career working for a gym or a studio because it gives them the experience they need to eventually go off on their own. I decided to start getting my own clients right off the bat. I didn’t want to work for a big box gym. I knew exactly what I wanted to do and what I had to offer. My mentors were a great inspiration and I wanted to do for other what they had done for me. The word spread like wildfire and within a few months I was getting requests for training.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a mom of 2 amazing boys, Liam and Bryce who brighten up my world. I’ve always wanted to be a good example for them. I especially wanted them to know how strong women were. Being a mom was and will always be the most important job of my life. Helping others is my second. I was 30lbs overweight and depressed. All my energy went to my family and I was cutting myself short just like many other moms. So I finally decided to give myself some attention. I joined a group fitness class and committed to losing the weight. I also signed up for my first 1/2 marathon. 6 half marathons and 40lbs later I felt the best I’ve ever felt.
I was in the best shape of my life and I wanted other moms to feel this great too. I decided to take a leap and make it official. Once I began my Fitness Trainer career I was committed to helping others. My love language is service and helping others filled my bucket.
I’m most proud of showing my boys how strong women can be and how passionate we can be about inspiring others.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I was the busiest I’ve ever been in 2019. I was teaching 8-10 group fitness classes a week plus a few one on one clients. I was exhausted and was reaching a breaking point where I wasn’t feeling satisfied by what I was doing anymore. Come 2020 when COVID hit and everything changed. My studio closed and I was out of a job.
I was hearing from stressed clients and friends about not being able to workout. So I decided to go virtual. Zoom was booming so I joined the explosion and was extremely successful. I was able to help people in a desperate time of need.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back I would definitely choose the same profession. It’s extremely rewarding. Not only am I helping people on their fitness journey, I’m also helping myself. I’ve maintained my strength and healthy weight which is the best gift I can give myself. I’ve set a good example for my kids and the people around me.
