Alright, Marisabel Bazan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
Growing up, I internalized the belief that being an artist was merely a hobby, not a legitimate career path. However, I eventually realized that this perception was not my truth; it was simply the perspective of others and their chosen paths. I decided to commit myself fully to my craft, being consistent and ready for any opportunities that came my way.
As I dedicated myself to honing my skills and preparing for opportunities, I began to see that being a creative artist is indeed a viable job, requiring dedication and perseverance like any other profession. When opportunities finally arrived, I was prepared to seize them, knowing that my hard work had equipped me for success.
This journey empowered me to embrace my passion and share my work with the world, despite societal norms and doubts. It’s a testament to the importance of believing in oneself, breaking free from external perceptions, and pursuing one’s true calling with confidence and determination.
Marisabel Bazan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a multidisciplinary artist, and my journey into the world of art began with a career as a professional dancer. Through dance, I discovered a profound love for music, which eventually led me to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter. However, during a period of introspection and silence, my artistic expression evolved beyond music and into the realms of painting, sculpture, and public art.
This transition marked a significant turning point in my artistic journey, as I explored new mediums and forms of expression. Despite initially feeling uncertain about how to approach these new avenues of creativity, I embraced my innocence and allowed it to fuel my confidence. With a growing portfolio of diverse work, I embarked on a journey of consistency and perseverance, knocking on doors and seizing opportunities as they arose.
For me, the process of translating my imagination into tangible works of art has been incredibly empowering. Each piece I create is a reflection of my innermost thoughts, emotions, and experiences, and it brings me immense joy to share these creations with the world.
What sets me apart as an artist is my ability to seamlessly navigate multiple disciplines, infusing each work with a unique blend of movement, melody, and visual expression. Whether through dance, music, painting, sculpture, or murals, I aim to evoke a sense of connection and inspiration in those who experience my art.
I am most proud of my journey of self-discovery and artistic evolution, as well as the impact my work has had on others. Through my art, I strive to solve the problem of disconnect by fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the human experience.
Potential clients, followers, and fans should know that my brand is rooted in authenticity, creativity, and passion. Whether you’re drawn to my music, captivated by my paintings, or inspired by my sculptures, I invite you to join me on this journey of exploration and expression.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the profound connection I foster with others through my work. There’s something truly magical about the way art transcends language and cultural barriers, allowing me to communicate on a deeper, more emotional level with people from all walks of life. Whether it’s evoking a shared sense of joy, provoking thought-provoking conversations, or inspiring individuals to see the world in a new light, knowing that my art has touched someone’s heart or sparked a meaningful connection is incredibly fulfilling. It’s these moments of connection and understanding that fuel my passion and drive to continue creating, knowing that art has the power to unite and uplift us all.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the most important lessons I’ve had to unlearn as an artist is the pursuit of perfection. There was a time when I believed that achieving perfection in my craft was the ultimate goal, but I’ve come to realize that this mindset can actually hinder creativity and growth.
This realization hit me particularly hard during a recent music workshop with a well-known producer whom I deeply admire. I was prepared to perform one of my songs, but when I stepped onto the stage, I suddenly went blank. The lyrics escaped me, and I found myself struggling to remember even the most basic elements of the song.
In that moment of vulnerability, I had to confront the fact that I wasn’t perfect, and that it was okay to make mistakes. It was a humbling experience, but it also taught me a valuable lesson about the beauty of imperfection.
The producer, sensing my struggle, sat beside me and encouraged me to be brave—to improvise and make up lyrics on the spot. In letting go of my need for perfection and embracing the spontaneity of the moment, I was able to connect with the audience in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
This experience reminded me that creativity thrives in moments of vulnerability and authenticity. It’s not about adhering to a rigid set of rules or expectations, but rather about being open to the unexpected and embracing the imperfections that make art truly human. Since then, I’ve learned to approach my craft with a newfound sense of freedom and flexibility, allowing myself to take risks and grow as an artist.
