We recently connected with Marisa Leilani and have shared our conversation below.
Marisa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I think the most meaningful project I’ve done was painting a mural at Nucis Space in Athens, GA. Nucis Space is a non profit organization that helps musicians and artist that don’t have health care get help for doctors and therapy. They provide cheap practice rooms for bands to practice in and have helped me in so many ways. When I was asked to paint a mural for their entrance I was so thrilled to create a welcoming piece for my second home.
Marisa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I love painting functional art, whether it be murals, mailboxes, or guitars, I love painting things that people will use throughout their day. I used to build guitar pedals for Greer Amps and realized then that I absolutely love creating things that would be used in everyday life. I now paint 2-3 murals a month and couldn’t be happier! I love adding color to blank walls and love seeing peoples faces when they see their ideas come to life!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I feel like my main goal as an artist is to get people to want to be outside and explore. I feel like so many people get into this basic routine they have and don’t go out and enjoy nature. I am currently working on making a scavenger hunt, so far there are 32 painted flowers and a google map to all of them. Some of them you have to kayak to, some you hike to and some it’s just a short, simple walk. I color coded them all and hope that it gets people out and enjoying the beautiful spots there are in this world.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There’s so many rewarding aspects of this job. I love that I get to create everyday, I love that I get to make my own schedule but I think, most importantly, I love that I get to share my ideas with strangers, they pass my murals everyday and it effects everyone differently. I wouldn’t give that up for anything.
