We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marion Brooks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marion below.
Hi Marion, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I am very happy as an artist/creative. There have been plenty of times where I thought about getting a regular job, but it would only be to help fund my music. The last time I thought about getting a regular job was when my dad was cooking dinner, and he said ” what if you get a job at chick-fil-a?” I don’t have anything against chick-fil-a or their workers, but I don’t wanna do that. I’m happy as an artist and I believe I wont be as happy if I get a regular job.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Since I was 4 or 5 I was mesmerized by music. I remember when my parents bought me a toy piano for my birthday and I played with it everyday. The way it sounded, the vibration from the piano made me feel so happy. So ever since my 4th or 5th birthday I have always been in love with the piano or sound in general. When I turned 11 my grandmother passed on, and she was my rock, she was my everything. So when she passed I picked up music more seriously as an outlet to help me cope. I was using all of the beat making websites, apps, etc. It was a new flame that inspired my music career now. My auntie Tonja bought me my first piano, and my auntie Ta taught me how to play the piano. When I got more experienced in playing the piano I started making beats more frequently. I started to sell beats and make beats for my peers, and or creatives who need that outlet. Which is what inspired my business Mari Beat Workshop. I make custom beats, I sell beats, and I do collaborations with other artists, producers, and or creatives. On the collaborating side of things, I have a community/group of independent artists, producers and creatives called Powerful Music Minds. Powerful Music Minds is a community of independent creatives that come together and create music with each other. It was created to give newer creatives a safe space to create, a place to learn, and a support system for any new projects you have. I’m very proud of how far P.M.M has come as a community, we are still getting started but we have come a long way for it to have been 5-6 months. I am also proud of my first ever EP: Summer ’24. It was made out of love, freedom, and happiness. I just hope that when people listen to it they will feel the same.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Honestly, if we supported each other’s endeavors we would thrive as a community. If we see a video of someone advertising their music, playing music, or any creative project like it. Share it, re-post it, comment, etc. It would help a lot of independent and underrated artists who are just getting started and trying to create the right way.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist/creative is having people listen to your art and they like it, or they want to hear more of what you do. Also collaborating with other creatives is very rewarding. Because you get to come together and make a masterpiece with each other. Its all about the memories, not the money.
