We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mario Scroggins. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mario below.
Mario, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Our parents, because there are 5 of us, raised us in the church. There, we were able to learn about our salvation but we also got to witness them display their talents. My mother and father both sang in the choir and held many leadership roles in the church. It was this example that helped us see action in their words. They also strategically supported the individual paths we all took. They never pushed us to do anything, yet, they respected each of our independent ways and ensured that we were supported.
We were never rich in “things,” but we were and still are wealthy in core values. Those core values have kept us morally successful throughout our lives and we still have the full support of our parents in all that we do.

Mario, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
I have a Bachelors and a Masters in Music Education. I am a pure educator and taught successfully for 14 years. In 2013, my then Principal asked me to cater an event for our staff at her house party. I had always cooked for friends and family but never anything on a large scale with unfamiliar people. The event was a success and from it I became the go to caterer for small campus events. Another co-worker trusted me to cater his wedding. Through more and more smaller gigs from co-workers, I averaged about 1 event every 2 months and it continued to grow. In 2015, I official got my license and in 2019 as business had significantly grown, I retired from teaching and became a full time caterer. It was very scary but I knew that God had set the stage and though I loved teaching, it was the perfect opportunity to truly step out on faith and into a new phase of life. That decision has been and is still a great decision.
I once prayed that God would grant me with 1 event per month. Now, we have 3-4 events and week and 2 events on a slow week. The increase that God has provided is un-imaginable but I am walking with him in it and I pray daily that my story and journey is inspiration for someone else to do the same; keep going, your day is coming.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What helped me build a good reputation is that my service exceeded my pricing. I was offering food and service that other businesses would charge double for. Our food is AMAZING; However, most of our customers that leave reviews praise our Service, Professionalism and our Presentation. Our presentation stands out amongst the best in our city. We work to ensure that our clients are afforded great service without having to break the bank.
