We were lucky to catch up with Marino De La Cruz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marino, appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
Erstyl was born on August 14, 2021, during a transformative trip to Florida. While on vacation, I found myself wrestling with the idea of becoming a business owner, uncertain of the immense responsibilities it would entail. Yet, throughout my time away, a powerful vision kept emerging—one that felt almost like a calling. I realized the impact this venture could have, not just for me, but for the countless lives it could touch and transform. This realization became my driving force.
Upon returning from my trip, I immediately began working to turn my vision into reality. I brainstormed names that were both striking and meaningful, eventually combining the words “empower” and “hairstyle” to create Erstyl. The next step was to design a brand logo that could truly capture the essence of the name. Using the platform 99designs, I worked with a talented designer to bring my vision to life.
With the logo complete, I turned my attention to the physical space. While I was familiar with Westchester, I wanted to find a location that would align with the spirit of my vision. After much searching, I discovered the perfect spot in Scarsdale, NY. It had everything I needed and more, setting the stage for the next challenge—designing the interior. I enlisted the help of a 3D render designer on Fiverr, and together we created a stunning, modern space that perfectly reflected the energy of Erstyl.
Yet, the journey was far from over. I still had to navigate the complexities of paperwork, legalities, and the bureaucratic hurdles of securing approval from the town board—a challenge almost as daunting as finding the right contractor. After eight long months of determination, planning, and hard work, Erstyl was finally ready to open its doors.
It took two significant personal loans, my savings, and unwavering dedication to make this dream a reality. But with every challenge, I grew more confident in the purpose and promise of what Erstyl would become—a place not just for beauty, but for empowerment.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I was 13 years old when my cousin, a barber at the time, approached me with a simple question: “Do you want to learn how to cut hair?” I had no idea that saying “yes” would profoundly shape the course of my life. Eighteen years later, I find myself driven to transform the barbering industry by improving the workplace culture and redefining its image.
Throughout my journey, I’ve worked in environments that often felt unsafe, unfair, and unprofessional. Those experiences inspired me to seek change. As a barbering school instructor and state-certified barber examiner, I’ve seen firsthand the gaps in preparing future barbers for success. This realization has fueled my passion to uplift this industry, not just for the craft itself but for the people who dedicate their lives to it.
My vision is to create a space where barbers and stylists can thrive in a professional environment, showcasing their artistry while growing personally and financially. I aim to inspire individuals to reach their full potential, offering clients an experience that goes beyond a haircut. At Erstyl, we strive to educate and empower our clients, cultivating a sense of connection with our unique culture.
Our brand stands out by attracting those who seek more than just a service—those who value knowledge, experience, and meaningful interactions. What makes me most proud is witnessing how far this vision has come to life and the impact we’re making on the lives of both our team and our clients. Erstyl is not just a business; it’s a movement toward excellence, growth, and community.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Securing the capital to bring my vision to life was anything but easy. I started with $20,000 in savings, but by the time I signed the lease, I quickly realized I needed an additional $60,000. The most nerve-wracking moment came before even signing the lease. Three banks had already declined my loan applications, and I was down to my last option. Reluctantly, I did what I swore I wouldn’t—I involved my mother as a co-signer for a $40,000 loan.
The process was grueling. Weeks of submitting paperwork, proof of income, and business plans left me bracing for yet another rejection. Then, just two days before receiving the keys to the salon, I got the call: I had been approved. The first person I called was, of course, my mother. I’m not usually one to cry, but as I shared the news with her, tears of joy streamed down my face.
The journey didn’t end there. Six months later, I hit another hurdle. I realized I needed an additional $25,000 to complete the project and finally open the business. This was terrifying because I couldn’t turn to my mother again—she was already tied to the previous loan. After weeks of research, I found another bank, but my application was quickly denied.
Feeling the pressure, I reached out to my cousin. With her support as a co-signer, I was able to secure the funds I needed. At long last, I completed the work and officially opened the doors to my business on August 17, 2022. I am also proud to share that within two years in business I have been able to pay the two loans I got from the banks.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
The best advice I can offer for managing a team is to lead by example. Your team needs to see your dedication and the effort you put into your work. By setting a strong tone through your actions, you establish the kind of leadership they’ll be inspired to follow.
Equally important is understanding what your team needs to feel valued and motivated while working at your establishment. Take the time to listen, learn, and deliver on those needs—it’s essential to building a positive and productive work environment.
Lastly, consistently engage your team with your vision. Remind them at every opportunity of your mission and why their contributions are vital to achieving it. When your team feels connected to a shared purpose, they’re empowered to give their best and help bring that vision to life.
