We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marina Shkolnik a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Marina, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents let me go to college for Fine Art Photography when most immigrant parents wanted their kids to be doctors, lawyers, or computer specialists.
Marina, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was a photographer since I was 15 years old. The idea of making life still captivated me. I did art and photography in high school and got a Bachelor of Fine Art in Photography. I specialize in photographing people. At the moment, I do creative staged shoots, headshots, and business branding. I also do one week of family photography for a local elementary school in November.
What sets me apart from other photographers is my diverse background, my education, my work ethic, and my simple frame of mind. I am easy to work with, dependable, responsible, and I enjoy working with people. Those qualities can’t be faked.
I am grateful for my work on the “She is PepsiCo” project, one of the coolest opportunities I have had. This will be my fourth year photographing women on the front line of Pepsi. And those images are printed on trucks in their particular areas.
I want my potential clients and followers to know that I aim to be the best at what I do. Thus, I want to give you the image you are looking for.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Word of mouth.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
You only fail when you don’t do anything. A creative journey is an exploration of continuous effort, mostly, nothing happens, and then it does. It’s patience and effort into a goal you have set for yourself. My work is rewarding; I love meeting new people and working with all that comes my way. It makes me feel alive.
