We were lucky to catch up with Marina Sarti recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Marina thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
What does Corporate America get wrong in the Beauty Industry? In my personal experience Corporate America makes a formula or protocol fit for mostly every contact made with a client or customer. I understand the need for this however this does not work in the beauty industry. We are servicing individuals who are loyal to us for their customized experience. It is so important to me that we never forget we have real people in our chair that come to us to be recognized and seen as individuals, and not feel as if they are one of the masses. Being a small business owner gives me the opportunity to know everyone’s name, ask how their families are and how their vacation was. Maybe someone has had a bad experience getting their hair done and has more worries than most so we need to allow more time for consulting. Others may be popping in on their lunch break and I have to be efficient in the service I give so they can look the best they can in the shortest amount of time. In the Beauty Industry there is no such thing as one size fits all and the only formulas we make are hair color.

Marina , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hailing originally from Springfield, Illinois, I have lived in the Greater Phoenix area most of my life. Growing up, I was always doing everyone’s hair but hadn’t quite realized it was my calling. I didn’t have a WHY attached to my motivation for wanting to make everyone look beautiful. I didn’t fully understand why I was drawn to hair until I was 20 years old when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and began chemotherapy treatments. With the loss of her hair, she lost a big piece of herself and her confidence.
I wanted more than anything to give her something that made her feel like herself again, to feel beautiful again. I had found my WHY. A month after that, I started my journey at Paul Mitchell the School Phoenix, where I learned directly from Scott Cole and Linda Yodice, two of Paul Mitchell’s most reputable Artistic Directors. After working at various salons, I established Sarti Studio in 2016 to create a more personal and intimate atmosphere for my clients.
I entered the beauty industry to make people feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside. I prioritize continuing my education and actively building my skills as a stylist, and work very hard to make every person in my chair feel special. For me, the beauty industry is so much more about how you feel, than how you look. It is my personal goal to have every client leave my chair feeling joyful and confident. After several years behind the chair, I am very proud of the personal brand I have been able to build, and am incredibly excited to share that expanded experience with industry professionals. I have recently opened Beauty Square Salon Suites and am thrilled to be able to help shape a community of talented professionals through support, safety, and shared customer values.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been referrals from my current clients. I have made a tremendous effort to connect with every client that sits in my chair. I want them to know that I care and am invested in them and how they feel about themselves. I also work very hard to continue my education on techniques for coloring, blonding, cutting, styling and extensions. I can honestly say that I have never advertised. My base clientele has believed and trusted in me so much, they have shared within their networks of colleagues, friends and family and my business hasn’t stopped growing since and I am forever grateful for that.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I believe consistency has helped to build my reputation within my market. Consistency throughout every part of my business starting with working a consistent schedule and always being present and on time. When clients have told me why they’ve left previous stylists, reliability is a top 3 reason. I also make tremendous effort to always have an upbeat and positive attitude. I strive to be a day maker and spread joy to every person I interact with throughout my day. And lastly, I try my very best to stay consistent in my work. Every client that sits in my chair has hundreds of other options to get their hair done at and they have chosen ME. I remind myself of this every everyday and it helps me to stay focused on the service I am being trusted with.
