Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marilyn Tierra . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Marilyn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
I absolutely take vacations as much as I can. As a business owner, I always feel there is a task that can be done or there is something new I can learn to elevate my business. However, I specifically carve out time to step away from my business to vacation to create lifelong memories. My advice to entrepreneurs who feel they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation is to change their perspective. Life is more than running a successful business. Your spouse, children, family and friends will always cherish those moments. You want to leave more than generational wealth behind for your loved ones. God intended for us all to enjoy life. There will be seasons where you have to put in the work and block out all distractions, but there will also be seasons where you can step away and refresh yourself. Your business will survive. I actually think your business will elevate by giving yourself and your employees rest. This allows everyone to have a healthy work life balance. Consequently, this will produce a better work performance for your company.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Ten years ago, I obtained my passport and booked my first international trip to the Atlantis Bahamas. During this vacation, my husband proposed to me. I knew immediately that I wanted to have a beach destination wedding. Shortly after, I extensively researched EVERY resort in the Caribbean/ Mexico to have my destination wedding. I unofficially become a travel enthusiast that day. I felt a tremendous responsibility to find the best resort for my family and friends, because they were spending their hard earned money to attend my wedding. I selected the best resort and everyone was amazed. After the wedding, I continued to travel to other resorts for anniversaries, birthdays, and family vacations. Everyone would come to me and ask what was that place you all visited? So I decided to apply that expertise to help other book their vacations and get compensated for doing so. One of the most important things that sets me apart from others is that I take vacations very seriously and I do have high standards. I thoroughly research destinations because I want the best experiences for my clients. In addition, it does help that I have traveled to a few places so I can give first hand experience to my clients.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Before I became a travel agent, I would take a few vacations a year and I would always post them on social media. So most of my followers have seen my journey of me being proposed to vacation, have a destination wedding/ honeymoon, celebrating anniversaries and family vacations. I think this helped build my reputation in the travel industry. So now I am able to help others plan their vacations.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
One of my favorite podcast is Earn Your Leisure, This podcast has impacted my entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy because it has added to my mindset. Their main philosophy is having assets over liabilities and having multiple streams of income. This is the way I live my life. That is why I chose to invest in real estate and become a travel agent. This allows me to have passive income from rental property, income from being a travel agent and income from a job. In addition, having more assets over liabilities and multiple streams of income allows me to have the freedom to travel and spend time with my family.
