We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Marilyn Nolte a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marilyn, thanks for joining us today. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
One of the best investments I made was going to Dallas Market and flying down one of my best friend’s, Becca, to help shop. Having a second set of eyes and opinions I think is a huge factor to the company’s success so far. It also made the trip far less stressful having someone there to talk about the buy with. I can’t imagine doing a buying trip solo!
Marilyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi Everyone! I’m Marilyn, the owner of Intemporelle. A little background, I was lucky enough to be introduced to the fashion industry at a young age, through a modeling contract causing me to move to LA a few short weeks after my 17th birthday. I had dreamed of being in the industry since I was a little girl, carrying around a sketch book. While in LA, I loved learning more about the behind the scenes aspect: stylists, producers, designers, etc. So, I decided to move to New York City and study fashion business at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Here, I was able to learn the ins and outs of the industry through amazing professors and internships.
For Intemporelle, I always planned to have my own business, but recently decided to go for it and start this on the side in addition to my full time job. My main priority for Intemporelle is bringing back clothing you can wear multiple seasons, with trends in a more simplistic way. Nowadays, trends can last just a few short weeks. I want my customers to know that the pieces they buy won’t be “out of style” next month.
It’s so rewarding seeing the hard work and planning pay off when someone loves their purchase.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The hardest lesson to learn was that I’m not just buying for myself, but for my customers. Something that I see and absolutely love, may not translate the same way to others. There is a fine line between playing it safe and taking risks when buying. This is still something I am trying to navigate. But I am so glad that the Nashville fashion scene is growing and adaptable!
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
One of the biggest ways, I started to grow my socials was word of mouth. I am so lucky to have a great group of friends and family who helped get the word out when I started my company. It is crazy how far one person telling another can go! The biggest tip is following trends, whether relating to your company or not, and adapting it to your niche. TikTok right now is a huge way to grow your audience. (I am absolutely no expert. and still learning everyday!)
