We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marilyn Biles. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marilyn below.
Marilyn, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I am very happy as an artist. Ever since I can remember being an artist was who I was, its brought me so much fulfillment. I love sharing my art, especially when someone also has a personal connection with a painting. At one point I was teaching art to young students, children’s natural creativity has always inspired me and given me much joy. The regular jobs I had in the past always consisted of or focused on art. I have no regrets in the jobs I chose to do even when I was not a full time artist. Every experience brought insight to my paintings in new ways.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Being an artist and designer are not labels I use for work but its who I am. It seems that fashion and nature are incompatible. As a young woman I loved beauty and fashion, but when I needed to be nurtured I would find my way to a serene spot where I could absorb healing energy from nature. That was the place where the outer and inner stimulated each other. I believe that is why there has been a current of landscape and earth related ideas in my work. Some of the paintings in this series “Investigating natural changes in the earth” were experienced through the news media, yet they still had a powerful impact on me that compelled an expression in my work and my world. I am constantly inspired by the world around me. I create from a meditative place from within. I have been blessed to be surrounded by people who have supported my work and have felt a connection to my paintings .
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect is having other people relate to my work.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn other people opinions of being an artist. Art was not encouraged nor respected in the family I grew up. I learned resilience and how to follow my own hear despite the negative response of others.
The best year of my life was my experience at Moore Collage of Art & Design. I was surrounded by other artists and teachers who encouraged growth and individuality. I now have endowed a merit scholarship to help other young girl pursue their dreams. After all theses years I have maintained my relationship with the school president and even had the opportunity to host her here in my home in Houston. I would encourage any artist to surround themselves with people of similar values and talents.
