We recently connected with Mariia Tsvetkova and have shared our conversation below.
Mariia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I wish I hadn’t doubted myself when it came to pursuing music. After high school, I thought music might not work out, so I got a marketing degree as a backup. It wasn’t a waste of time—I’ve used it and still do—but I wish I’d been more confident in my passion for music from the start. I started taking music seriously at 17. My parents were supportive, but a lot of people around me often said you can’t make money in music or that I needed a normal job, and that affected me. Later, I realized I didn’t care about what others thought, so I went for it anyway.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Of course. My name is Mariia, and I’m originally from a small town near Moscow. I started my music career at around 18, writing songs, releasing them, and performing with a band in Russia. I also traveled and performed in Europe, including the Czech Republic, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland.
In 2019, I was invited to a songwriting camp in Palm Springs, California, hosted by hit writers Pam Sheyne and Richard Harris. The camp was incredibly inspiring, and I met some industry professionals who wanted to work with me, so I decided to stay. I connected with an amazing songwriter, Nitanee Paris, the A&R director at ArtistMax, and she became one of the main reasons I stayed. Her support, along with everyone else’s, was incredible.
Since then, I’ve been working with a lot of writers and producers and getting involved in many projects. I’ve worked a lot with ArtistMax, a label Nitanee introduced me to, founded by Grammy-winning producer Ken Caillat. I’ve been writing non-stop, performing in LA, and it just keeps going, which I’m very happy about. I write for myself, for others, and for film and TV. I release music, perform, and embrace all aspects of being an artist. I have a lot of exciting plans, and I can’t wait to see what’s next!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I want young artists to know that no matter where you come from or what your background is, you can achieve whatever you want. Your background doesn’t define you. Everyone is unique, and with dedication to your craft and the determination to reach your goals, you can get there.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I used to think that you had to work crazy hours to reach your goals. With time and experience, I learned that you can’t just work all the time. It’s very important to have balance. Otherwise, you’ll burn out and won’t be able to do anything.
