We recently connected with Mariela Romero and have shared our conversation below.
Mariela , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
In my book, I emphasize that most people believe magic is merely an element of fairy tales, not something tangible and real within our everyday lives. Yet, I’ve consistently observed and experienced that magic is all around us, not just in stories but in our lives, in real and often overlooked moments.
From my journey, I’ve discovered that magic isn’t an abstract concept but a palpable force woven through the fabric of daily existence. In “La magia, tu superpoder,” I introduce a methodology—the “7 Cs” for creating magic in your life—to rekindle the wonder that many lose as they grow older. This methodology isn’t about supernatural phenomena; it’s about recognizing and harnessing the beauty and potential surrounding us.
I recount a transformative experience during a humanitarian trip to Haiti, where I planned to deliver a grave message about global disparities. Instead, I found myself moved to tears by the joy and resilience of the Haitian children. Despite my intention to comfort them, I was comforted by their unexpected gestures of kindness and connection. This moment reinforced my belief in the everyday magic of human connection and the powerful impact of empathy and compassion.
This experience, among others, has taught me that magic is real and present. It is in the meaningful connections we forge, the unexpected outcomes from new endeavors, and the simple beauties of life that often go unnoticed. By sharing this perspective, I hope to inspire others to look beyond the mundane and recognize the magic in their own lives, influencing not just personal fulfillment but also broader societal transformation.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Mariela Romero, born in Venezuela and raised in France, Mexico, and Argentina.
I am an international speaker passionate about bridging cultural and communicative gaps. My journey has spanned over three decades in the broadcasting industry, where I have been honored with 27 Emmy Awards and the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from the White House.
I am also proud to be recognized by Georgia’s Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame as one of the state’s most influential Latinos.
From my early days in Venezuela to my experiences in France, Mexico, and Argentina, I have always been driven by a commitment to understanding and connecting with diverse communities. This multicultural exposure has significantly shaped my work and ethos, particularly in the United States, where I strive to empower the Latino community through transformational conferences and seminars.
In addition to my broadcasting career, I founded Inclusive Communications and developed a unique methodology that can transform even the most mundane moments into magical experiences. This approach is not just about creating engaging content; it’s about fostering genuine connections and inspiring others to see the magic in their everyday lives.
The concept of “magic,” which I explore in my book “La Magia, Tu Superpoder” (The Magic, Your Superpower), is central to my philosophy. I believe that magic is not confined to fairy tales but is a tangible force that can catalyze change and deepen our understanding of the world. Through my book, I invite readers to rediscover this magic, encouraging them to look beyond the superficial and connect more profoundly with the essence of their existence.
What sets me apart in my field is not just my professional achievements but my relentless pursuit of growth—both personal and communal. I am most proud of how my work has helped others find their voice and strength in challenging environments. I am committed to continuing this mission, helping individuals and communities tap into their innate potential and embrace the transformative power of connection and understanding.
As we look to the future, my goal is to continue bridging gaps, fostering understanding, and helping others recognize and harness the magic that surrounds us all. Whether through my writings, speeches, or media content, I am dedicated to enriching lives and inspiring change—one story, person, and community at a time.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Throughout my journey, I have been profoundly influenced by several thinkers and authors whose works have shaped my philosophy. Wayne Dyer’s writings and talks have been a cornerstone in my development. His approach to self-realization and the power of intention has resonated deeply with me, guiding my professional choices and personal growth.
Psychologist Gay Hendricks has also shaped my thinking, especially his personal and professional development insights. His concepts on overcoming limitations and living in one’s “zone of genius” have been pivotal in managing my teams and designing my projects.
Deepak Chopra’s teachings on the synthesis of life and spirituality have given me a broader perspective on leadership and the importance of coherence between one’s values and actions. His holistic approach helps me stay centered amid the often chaotic world.
Lastly, Lynne MacTaggart’s work on intention and connectedness has reinforced my belief in the power of collective thoughts and their impact on our reality. Her research has inspired me to implement practices in my business that enhance connectivity and mutual understanding, aligning with my vision to bring about transformative experiences for my clients and audience.
Each of these authors has contributed to my understanding of leading with purpose and integrity. They remind me that true leadership involves fostering connections that go beyond mere business interactions to touch the essence of our human experience.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The COVID-19 pandemic was a pivotal moment for me, personally and professionally. As the world grappled with unprecedented challenges, I witnessed firsthand the disproportionate impact it had on the Hispanic-Latino community in the United States. The toll was not just economic but deeply personal, as many lives were lost, and countless others were irrevocably changed. This period of collective hardship made me realize the need to provide tools and resources tailored to help our community rebuild and reinvent their lives.
Motivated by this need, I decided to pivot my focus toward creating and offering resources that could truly make a difference. I developed workshops and programs aimed at empowerment, leveraging my background in broadcasting and community engagement to reach people on a wide scale. These initiatives were designed to address the pandemic’s immediate impacts and provide long-term strategies for personal and professional growth.
This pivot wasn’t just a business decision but a personal commitment to my community. I felt a deep responsibility to contribute positively and help alleviate some of the burdens the pandemic had placed on so many. Moving from traditional media and communications to more direct community involvement and support was challenging, but it was also incredibly rewarding. Seeing the real impact of these efforts, from individuals regaining their confidence to families starting new businesses, reinforced that this pivot was not only necessary but deeply fulfilling.
This experience underscored the importance of agility and responsiveness to the needs of those we serve. It taught me that sometimes, the most effective way to lead is by listening and adapting to the evolving challenges faced by our community. It was a profound lesson in resilience and purpose that continues to guide my work and my mission to empower and uplift the Hispanic-Latino community.
