We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mariela Fernandez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mariela, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
MFFPhotography has been a journey that started way back, even before MySpace was a thing. It all began with me snapping self-portraits, a journey of self-discovery and body acceptance. Those moments behind the lens taught me to cherish the present. As I delved deeper into photography, I began capturing my friends, and their positive reactions fueled my passion. Their feedback spurred me on to create, to offer others that same sense of self-exploration and love during our shoots. Since then, it’s been an incredible journey.
Moving to New York at just 16 was a turning point. Working with modeling agencies, fashion models, magazines, and designers, I’ve had the privilege to create magic with amazing people who trusted my vision. The common thread in all the feedback? How safe, comfortable, and downright fun the experience was.

Mariela, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I jumped into the world of photography when I landed in New York at 16. That’s where the real magic began! 🌟 I started teaming up with modeling agencies, fellow creatives, and all sorts of models in the Big Apple. I’m mostly self-taught. Learned some of the ropes back in the Dominican Republic, with just a couple of basic photography classes and one on commercial photography. But it was enough to spark a fire in me for capturing timeless art through portraits. From modeling portfolios to family snaps and couple shots, I’ve done it all! Now, I’m diving back into event photography, especially for the LGBTQ and adult content creation scene.
For me, photography isn’t just about snapping pics; it’s about helping folks embrace themselves, their bodies, and spreading some serious self-love vibes. I love nudging people out of their comfort zones, encouraging them to explore new expressions and emotions. It’s all about self-awareness and growth.
What sets me apart? Well, I’m insanely passionate about creating and empowering people, both in front of the lens and behind. I’ve faced my fair share of challenges, but I’ve never backed down. I’ve learned the rules just to break ’em and stayed true to myself throughout the journey. Photography isn’t just a job; it’s my oxygen!
So, I’m that photographer who’ll push you to new heights, creatively and personally. Whether we’re crafting conceptual masterpieces or keeping it simple, I’ve got your back. My goal is to make every shoot safe, comfortable, and, most importantly, fun!
And hey, let’s keep it real—I’m not perfect. I’m still learning, growing, and striving to be my authentic self. But that’s what makes this journey so exciting, right?

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most fulfilling parts of being a creative soul is the sheer freedom to express from deep within. It’s about following your heart and soul, whether that means sticking to the rules, breaking them, or finding a unique blend of both. Art is subjective, and that’s the beauty of it! Not everyone will vibe with your work in the same way, and that’s totally cool. Everyone’s tastes are different, right? My hope is that whoever encounters my art feels a spark of inspiration or empowerment. That’s what it’s all about!

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One defining moment in my photography journey that truly showcases my resilience is when I unexpectedly became a mother. I was always the one adamant about not having kids, fully devoted to my photography work – my ultimate baby. But life had other plans, and when my daughter came into the picture, everything changed. Suddenly, I found myself thrust into single motherhood, facing a whole new set of challenges. I had to hustle, find other work to support us, all while battling postpartum depression.
The sudden shift in my life knocked me off balance, and I lost sight of my purpose – photography, my true passion. It’s been nine years since then, and the journey hasn’t been easy. But despite the setbacks, I refused to give up. Even when creating didn’t bring in the money I needed, I persisted because it’s ingrained in who I am.
Through it all, I’ve learned the true meaning of resilience. It’s not about never falling; it’s about getting back up, time and time again. And now, as I look back, I see how far I’ve come. Each day, I continue to create, not just for the sake of art, but as a testament to my strength and unwavering determination.
