We were lucky to catch up with Marie Yocum recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marie, appreciate you joining us today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
I have a client who came to me with Vision Problems, one eye was going out to the side and he had it taped off. Doctors were talking surgery. We started working on his neck muscles and he came to see me every week. After a few weeks he walked in with the biggest smile on his face, took the tape off and said, “look, it’s getting better” a few months later his eye was back to normal. He didn’t have to go through with the surgery and has his normal vision back these days. He still comes and sees me for maintenance about once per month but the eye remains good. Most likely cause was tight neck muscles putting pressure on his vision nerve and we were able to release this. I am so happy i was able to help
Marie, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I was born and raised in Germany and moved to America in 2010. From 2010-2019 I worked for a veteran non profit with the goal of preventing suicide. With this work I came across massage therapy and its benefits. We saw huge results in helping veterans deal with their pain and stressors. Unfortunately after a few years we lost our annual grant and had to pause the program. I wanted to bring it back and because I was already on payroll it seemed to be a win win: in 2019 the company decided to restructure and I opted to do massage full time. I still love helping veterans these days and it still is a big percentage of my clients
I love injury work and helping people feel better. Release of tension and stress and help my clients get into a better, happier, pain free lifestyle
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
When I was still in massage school and received the news my previous employer wanted me to leave it was devastating. I had spend the last 9 years giving my all in helping veterans and couldn’t imagine not being able to do so anymore. I was going through a divorce at the same time and my ex husband worked for the same company. After I was let go, with still two months left in massage school I didn’t really know where to go or what to do. My family is in Germany, my marriage was in shambles and I was pretty much homeless with a two year old. Due to the Grace of God and connecting me to a very sweet lady from church, I was able to move into her basement and live there for 6 months with my daughter. I was able to finish massage school and start my career as a licensed massage therapist. It was a long hard journey but I’m glad I didn’t give up. Life these days is good
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
As a massage therapist, my most effective way in growing my business has been word of mouth. I have asked clients to leave a review for me on Google and a lot of new clients tell me, they booked with me due to my reviews.
