We were lucky to catch up with Marie Mandeville recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marie, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Often outsiders look at a successful business and think it became a success overnight. Even media and especially movies love to gloss over nitty, gritty details that went into that middle phase of your business – after you started but before you got to where you are today. In our experience, overnight success is usually the result of years of hard work laying the foundation for success, but unfortunately, it’s exactly this part of the story that most of the media ignores. Can you talk to us about your scaling up story – what are some of the nitty, gritty details folks should know about?
From part time side hustle to career. I had been a part time professional organizer for 8 years until the day I jumped. Organizing started off as something I merely enjoyed doing. My father was in the military so we were told and made to keep things a very particular way. I often wondered why my brother would get upset at the idea of tidying it but it just made me excited. Even as a teenager when my mom would go to the grocery store my job was to make sure the pantry looked perfect for the upcoming week.
I got my first paid job in 2013. I was estastic and once I knew I could be paid for doing what I love my eyes started to open, My reality was that I was a single mom to an amazing and very busy little girl. I have only missed one softball game(season is ten months long) and I have always been very active with what she has going on. I knew that quitting my job and pursuing my business full time was not an option for me. Fast forward to March of 2020 and my business took off at the start of a pandemic. I not only worked my full time corporate job but I also took 3-5 clients a week. There was once a time that I worked 58 days with not one day off. I dont brag on my work ethic but I like to talk about someone taking a hobby and turning it into a thriving business! Fast forward to October 19-2021 to being my last day with corporate America. In those moments I knew it was time to jump. My manager was fussing at my in regards to recent typos and not feeling like I was no longer a team player. This coming from the hands down person with the highest energy in the room. She called me for a last minute call and asked if we need to discuss anything. I said no and after the call I sent her my 2 week notice. I understood where she was coming from because mentally as this point I was checked out and yes there were typos because I was merely tired. You try working 80 hours a week for 18 months.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi my name is Marie Mandeville and I am a professional organizer. I make homes function so my clients can live their best lives. I started organizing in 2013. This all started with a family that I found on craigslist that was looking for someone to clean their home. I took a 6 hour cleaning job to a 3 hour cleaning job once I started to organize the spaces. I am most proud that I have built this business. I took something that I enjoy doing and made it my business. I change clients lives one organized space at a time.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Do it organically. Don’t be so concerned with the number of followers you have, Focus on the content and the rest will come. Yes I have 2500 but I still generate a six figure income.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Think about the time you worked a corporate job. Think about what leadership did that you didn’t agree with and do the opposite! OK that was a joke. Being the boss comes with a duty to keep your employees happen. Know that you can’t please them all but a happy work environment goes along way.
