We were lucky to catch up with Marie Dunn recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marie, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2018, after completing my first book of erotic poetry under my pseudo name -Toya J, I was met with the harsh reality of the publishing world for first-time authors. Despite my excitement and creative fire, I quickly realized how difficult it was to break through without connections, resources, or industry knowledge. Determined not to let those obstacles serve as a roadblock, I made a detour and a bold decision: I would become an independent author and publish it myself. That’s how Bold Flamingo Publishing was born—a company built from courage, creativity, and an unshakable belief that I can. At the time, I was clueless and had very few resources. Financially, I was stretched thin. I remember sitting in my office drafting a crowdfunding letter, humbly asking friends for support to help me bring my dream to life. Unfortunately, I was met with much disappointment. But rather than giving up, I chose to keep moving forward. In what I can only describe as an act of radical faith, I made the difficult decision to return my car to the dealer so I could fund my business. It was a risk that felt like Russian Roulette—but I had faith. Just when I thought I was gaining traction, life interrupted. My father suffered a stroke, and in an instant, on January 13, 2019, on my birthday, my world shifted. The days, months, and years that followed tested everything within me—my patience, strength, and faith. But in those challenging moments, I also discovered something powerful: resilience is born in adversity. Looking back, I realize that not making a best-seller list or selling hundreds of copies was never the point. The real success was in what I gained—the lessons, the growth, and the courage to keep creating despite it all. Every setback was preparation for a greater comeback. Through this experience, I learned that the boldest stories don’t begin with certainty—they start with faith, sacrifice, and the willingness to bet on yourself even when the odds are against you. That’s the heartbeat of Bold Flamingo Publishing: to stop waiting for the perfect moment and start creating from where you are, with what you have.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When I migrated to the United States in 2001, I believed it was the perfect opportunity to fulfill my dream of becoming an attorney. I had envisioned myself advocating in courtrooms and championing justice—but life had a different plan. After flunking the LSATs, my ego was bruised, yet that setback turned out to be a divine redirection. I could either dwell on my failure or pivot and explore other paths. I chose the latter and decided to pursue Plan B: graduate school to become a social worker. In truth, this wasn’t a random choice—it was a return to my roots. Growing up in Jamaica, I watched my mother serve as the unofficial village social worker, helping anyone in need with compassion and grace. It was from her that I learned the power of serving, empathy, and community. As a social worker, my passion for helping others became my daily motivation. I find deep purpose in being the voice for the voiceless, restoring hope to those who had forgotten how to dream—my ability to truly listen and to show up as my authentic self means so much to me. Combined with my warm smile and inviting presence, I’ve been able to create safe spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued. My passion—intertwined with my creative spirit—is what sets me apart. As an author, I’m unafraid to show my vulnerability through storytelling because I believe stories are how we heal, connect, and transform. They are the threads that bind us, the mirrors that reflect our shared experiences. My goal is to inspire, motivate, and empower others to heal, stay grounded, take risks, and, most importantly, to live fully, not just exist. The moments I cherish most are when a client smiles after a breakthrough or when I receive a message from someone I once served, expressing gratitude for how I made them feel empowered. Those are the reminders that I am living my purpose. I want everyone to know this: you are not your past. You have the power to design the life you deserve. Live in the moment—the only time that’s ever guaranteed. Don’t wait for the “right” time, because that is an illusion. Seize the present, for it is the only time we truly have.
Don’t wait—live now.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2017, my life took an unexpected turn when I was physically assaulted at work. The attack left me with injuries, two surgeries, and a battle with depression. It was one of the darkest chapters of my life—a moment that tested my faith, strength, and identity. But even in the midst of pain, I made a conscious decision: to forgive my assailant. It was not an instant or easy choice. It was a process that involved a lot of introspection, understanding, and empathy. Despite the concerns of my family and friends, I returned to my job. I refused to let the poor judgment of someone struggling with mental illness define or derail my path. That choice—to forgive and move forward—was not easy, but it became one of the most transformative decision of my life. That season introduced me to therapy for the first time, a space that played a crucial role in my healing journey. It allowed me to unpack my trauma and begin the work of healing. The physical scars remain—a constant reminder etched on my shoulder—and I still live with chronic Pain in my neck and shoulder. Yet, rather than being defeated by it, I’ve used that Pain as fuel to live boldly and fully. This emphasis on the healing power of therapy can reassure and encourage others facing similar challenges. In 2023, I ran my first marathon—the New York City Marathon. I’ll never forget the moment I hit mile thirteen. The Pain was excruciating. My fingers swelled, and the sharp ache shot through my shoulder and neck like a Ferris wheel spinning out of control. But quitting was not an option. That pain became my motivation. Step by step, I pushed through it—and crossed the finish line triumphantly. A year later, in 2024, I ran the Philadelphia Marathon. In April 2025 I participated in my first Spartan race, in June 2025 I ran my first Ultra Marathon and then in September 2025 Yonkers Marathon. And on October 26, 2025, I’ll be lacing up once again for the Marine Corps Marathon in Virginia. Every race reminds me that Pain is temporary—but perseverance is eternal. My journey has taught me that healing isn’t about the absence of Pain; it’s about the courage to keep going despite it. These lessons taught me that Pain will stop—if you believe it will.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Acknowledging that I am not okay and taking time for me comes to mind immediately. During my childhood days into young adulthood. I was always told to brush it off and keep moving. In essence expressing I was not okay was a sign of weakness. I had to unlearn this unhealthy way of thinking. I now realize that my vulnerability is my strength, and taking care of me first is not a selfish act but rather a necessity.
