We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MARIE DILLINGHAM a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MARIE, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
One of my most significant risks to date was letting go of all the contractual work, going freelance, and focusing on my DcySive Media network and NoStaticradio. it was definitely risky letting go of guaranteed work but I believe in the future of my goals and vision, not just in the work that I and my NoStaticRadio team and family grind for, but the future of journalism and the stories told and how the view and learn to better respect how our culture is viewed. It hasn’t been easy, but I love what I do and I love bringing work to life, I love that the platform we provide brings positive changes and affects lives.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
What sparked my interest in journalism was my grandma, she was the custodial worker at WEWS news channel 5 and some nights I would go with her especially in the summer because my mom worked at a developmental facility in Garfield Heights, Ohio and my dad was a construction worker and often worked nights; so my grandma would take me, my brother, and my sister to work with her at the news station. There we met our forever friend Dorothy Fuldheim, a legendary news journalist. Miss Fuldheim would show me around, sit with her at her news desk, and ask me to make sure she spelled everything correctly in her news scripts (I did not know she was a school teacher prior until we attended her funeral). I fell in love with journalism and from there anything I could be involved in from school announcements to in-class reports, I was there! In college, I first studied for a Liberal Arts degree and later a B.A. in Journalism Mass Communications, during that time I did things like start the Black Coalition at Kent Trumball and Associate Editor of the High Point newspaper at Tri-C. Since then I have done so many things, like work as a cosmetologist, a therapeutic program worker, and an entrepreneur. As far as journalism, I have worked tons of concerts, tv shows, and movie sets as well as interned and worked at a few news stations in Ohio and I still do freelance work as well.
As far as my business, my late grandfather Detective James Thompson purchased my radio/news station and told me I would need it one day, and well, he was right after all, and here I am today. After my heart was crushed and I departed from my dream work destination I started to put my time into what is now my life aka one of my babies.
Our mission at NoStaticRadio is to give a very relatable listening and viewing experience, with innovation, imagination, creativity, sensitivity, and originality. We are dedicated to giving our listeners and viewers the highest quality experience, and that’s not all; we don’t just want our listeners and viewers to enjoy their experience, we want them to walk away feeling special and appreciated knowing that their viewership and listening experience matters, their worth is our work and we appreciate their listening and viewership.
We hope our listeners and viewers walk away learning more, laughing more, appreciating music more, understanding relationships more, understanding themselves more, loving more, hopefully understanding life better, and pursuing whatever makes you happy. The NoStaticRadio experience should always be a FEEL GOOD experience and that is our mission.
What sets my business apart from others is my platform thrives on growth. Growth of my show hosts, businesses, and independent artist, and when we give to each other, it’s a win, win always.
What sets NoSaticRadio apart from others is our constant work in and around the communities, our awards show, our give-a-ways, our comedy boat cruises, our live talk shows, our karaoke nights, our dating show nights, and our shows on NSR period.
I am proud of the growth at NoStaticRadio, just look at our social media pages, the growth of everyone and everything we have accomplished is there for the world to see (I.G. TheReal_NoStaticRadio, on FB No STATIC Radio, and on Twitter NoStatic_Radio) and we are not done yet.
Of everything that I have said I must be clear on one thing that God would kick me for if I didn’t speak on it. I am nothing without my family and the love and support they have given me on my journey. I am truly blessed.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn wanting and trying to convince people to like me.
When people treated me badly and I knew I did nothing wrong I would work to get approval, and I was confused when from the beginning I was nice, and courteous and still received negative vibes, what I learned was their negativity towards me has nothing to do with me and to walk away from them and never let their negativity shrink you and allow it to run you away from anything, It affected my life unfortunately when I was younger and I wish I knew then what I know now.
I would seek help to gain knowledge or improve and receive bad or false information or no help at all. NEVER EVER GIVE UP!! NEVVVVVVEEEEERRRRR! Never let any negatively dysfunctional being kill your vibe or disturb your groove. Today I have taught my daughter to speak positivity over everything in her life, to stand tall, hold tight to her goals in life, and GO GET EM!!!

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want to be like Kathy Hughes. I want my media to compete with Viacom, Tegna, Sinclair Broadcasting, and Hello Doggies productions, and others that is my mission….. we are the Voice of the REVOLUTION. We are here to give voice to our lives and communities and not allow others to showcase false perspectives of our culture and people.
