We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marie-Charlotte Vatelot. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marie-Charlotte below.
Marie-Charlotte, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Having been a model in my twenties and an avid fashion and style lover, I started selling my clothes to give them a second life. After doing it for many years and taking environmental classes in college, I became passionate about extending the life of garments.
My friends would always ask me to help them sell their own clothes and bags. Detach With Love is a term that is used in a Twelve Step program (Al-Anon) and I thought if one day I really made something of this passion I would name it “Detach With Love”. To me it’s the idea of detaching from things that do not work anymore with the spirit of love and passing it to someone else. I launched a website in 2021 and things just organically fell into place.
With Detach With Love, I curate the best styles to sell in a circular fashion style and sustainable way.
Marie-Charlotte, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Parisian former model with a strong sense of style. I love curating luxe pieces for a forever closet and having essentials on rotation with more edgy items to give strong looks. I pride myself in finding treasures in some of the best consignors and also online. I can spend hours researching for unique pieces to offer them to my clients. I know my buyers very well and I often place items before even showing them to everyone one else.
I do live shows every week with on my partner “Christos Garkinos”‘s network and I sell things very fast thanks to a unique and stylish curation always showing the best condition items.
Since the Palisades fires burnt our business to the ground, I have shifted my business to mostly only live shows and it’s been fun and exciting to rebuild even better!
I think people follow my brand for my elevated casual chic look which is typical of the French girl.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The Palisades Fire, burnt my home and business to the ground on January 7th, 2025. I thought I was done: no one would ever consign with me after such loss. Being a single mother of two daughters (Cleo 6yo and Cassia Rose 4yo.) it was very challenging since their school burnt, our home and our entire city.
Thanks to the incredible support of partners, consignors and buyers I managed to get back on my feet in 7 days and plan a show with 80 items to show starting from $0 inventory. It was a record and I will never forget it. My right hand Elena, jumped in and we saved our business.
We had nothing: no inventory, no boxes, no labels, no printers, no desk and we managed to pull our first show from San Diego having never worked from there! We stayed at a wonderful family’s home we had never met, we received our first consignors’ boxes at another friend’s house and we were hosted at our dear partner’s Carrie to host our first live. The love and support from people helped me overcome the struggle of losing everything.
We kept working hard for the next 3 months and I can say our business is saved and better than ever.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is tough for everyone! I started with 0 followers for @detachwlove our brand’s IG handle. I grew it completely organically.
First of all, friends post about our new business helped. Then we had to take beautiful photos of product inventory, the iPhone is a magical tool. It’s safe to say that it created my business completely…
Live Shows are a huge factor for our social media success. We have a small following (only 6.3K followers) but all very engaged. We don’t need to have thousands more to sell. We need people who love what we do and become loyal customers as well as friends a lot of the time.
My partner Christos, created a wonderful community “Covet by Christos” which I’m fortunate to be part of. It had a huge impact on our development and I learn everyday from being amongst of the best resellers in the US. I love what I do and I’m not afraid of competition, I think we all bring something distinct to the table and there’s room for everyone!
