We recently connected with Marie-Axelle Anoman and have shared our conversation below.
Marie-Axelle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My name is Marie-Axelle Anoman, Graduate Student at Yeshiva University at the Katz School of Science & Health in New York. I’m originally from the Ivory Coast and I’ll tell you my story. How I became the owner of ”Shylahair ”. When I was younger, I was always attracted to long hair, (straight, body wave) and extensions. I thought it was nice to change from my natural hair, curly hair to long hair. Being a new person every time depending on my clothing style. As I grew up, I was more and more attracted to it, but I couldn’t afford it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
When I arrived in the United States, I decided to learn how to make wigs. The first times when I did it, it was for myself. I was so happy to learn because it was something I had dreamed of since I was a child. I still remember the day I made my first wig. I was so happy and proud of myself that I have also started doing it for some of my acquaintances. The people around me complimented my work and encouraged me to turn it into a business. That’s where it all started, and I began to get to grips with it. This is my first baby and it’s a business that’s close to my heart. I’m not perfect yet, but by GOD’s grace, I always manage to satisfy my customers, and get better every day.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
To maintain my audience, I decided to post videos or photos of what I did each week on my instagram because people need to see posts to remember that you exist. I had to learn how to edit videos (thanks to my sister Mynie), make content creations.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
For Shylahair’s anniversary, I did a giveaway to make one of my clients win a free wig. The first time I did that, my clientele has considerably grown. In addition, I’m currently thinking of giving free wigs to some influencers to make ads or video of my wigs and post them on their story or wherever they want. That will help me to have more visibility.
