Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Marice Tobias. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Marice, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
The Summer I graduated University, I interned on a film shooting in SoFla. The Scrit Supervisor was preident of the New YOrk local and volunteered to train me in the craft. The AD overheard me discussing following the film to New York to observe post production. He discouraged me from going due to thinking the New York “girls” were very sharp and competitive and I’d get run over. I went to NY and seven months later, was initiated into the Union.
He and I wound up on a shoot together and I asked him to tell me I’d never direct Commercials. He did. I was the first woman to do so. He dropped by the production company, looking for work and there I was, on staff, directing Commercials. I asked him to tell me I’d never direct a feature film. He reluctantly did so but decided that would be a long shot. When I directed my first feature film, I hired him to be my AD!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started dancing school when I was three. Always knew I was going to be in the Industry. When I directed my first play while in college, I knew that would be my calling. Additionally, have worked in many categories, each one drawing on the others.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I love working and hope to continue until I stop making sense!

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The Artist leads the Culture. Anything in our man-made world first passed through the hands of an artist. Yet, artists tend to get sidelong glances unless achieving superstar success . But, after a while sniping and resentments take their toll. We are all born with at least one gift…it’s up to us to figure it out and make the most of it. If everyone did that. a whole lot of suffering would be non-existent.
