We recently connected with Maribel Romo and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maribel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Yes, I’ve been in the beauty industry since 2009 and became independent in 2013. I now own a hair salon in Denton, TX. In the beginning, it was challenging to figure out my niche and determine where I wanted to grow as a hairstylist. Social media wasn’t as influential back then, so there weren’t as many sources of inspiration as there are today. Through it all, I prayed often and trusted God to guide me in my career.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Maribel Romo, and I am a wife, a mom, and someone deeply rooted in my faith—that’s what keeps me grounded.
I entered this industry seeking the freedom to be my own boss, earn a good living quickly, and enjoy a career that felt fun and exciting. But it became so much more than that. Along the way, I’ve met incredible people and discovered so much about myself.
Today, I am proud to call myself a business owner, something I once thought was out of reach. I’ve worked hard to get here, teaching myself discipline behind the chair, taking classes to improve my skills, and learning from others who generously shared their advice for growth.
Through my journey—working in salons, managing my own suite, and now owning my own salon—I’ve come to realize that relationships are at the heart of everything. I also believe deeply in fostering a healthy, positive salon culture, and that’s a core value I strive to provide in my business every day.
How did you build your audience on social media?
When I first started, social media was mostly a place for friends to share posts about family, pets, hobbies, and things like that. It wasn’t anything like the business-focused platforms we see today. But I was eager to grow my business, and I was genuinely proud of the work I was creating, so I decided to share it with my circle of friends. My goal was simple: attract actual friends or friends of friends as clients.
I set a goal to stay consistent online for a year and see what would happen—and it worked! While I don’t have a “huge” following compared to some, I take pride in the fact that most of my followers are organic and local. To me, that’s something to be proud of.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of what I do is seeing my clients’ happiness with the work I create for them and providing my hairstylists with a supportive space where they can grow their individual brands alongside mine.
