We were lucky to catch up with Maribel Habib Groth recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Maribel thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump right into the heart of things. Outsiders often think businesses or industries have much larger profit margins than they actually do – the reason is that outsiders are often unaware of the biggest challenges to profitability in various industries – what’s the biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
I would say some times costumers do not understand this is Art and we invest a lot of time and money to make our work some of the best and great quality, they don’t value our hard work.. Some costumers want cheaper and try to bargain to make artist in this industry try to price match some other artist prices
But they don’t see experience and amount of training we had to get to be some
Of the best PMU artist in this industry.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always had an artistic outlook on life. As a child, I loved painting and drawing on anything that I could use as a canvas. I moved to San Diego when I was 15 years old, and it’s been my hometown since.
In 2018 I decided to build something of my own. I kept seeing on social media posts about Microblading., I heard my calling and decided to take the first steps in becoming a semi-permanent Makeup artist by taking a class. The class was held in Los Angeles, California, and immediately fell in love with it. The satisfaction in transforming someone’s eyebrows and seeing their reaction of how happy they got with the results. This moment made my life feel fuller because my work helped someone else happier with their self-identity. I began to learn more about permanent makeup and began to add more services such as Lip Blush, Eyeliner.
I have helped many clients be happy and achieve to looks they want. They trust my work and soon thereafter inquire about other permanent makeup services I offer. I don’t regret choosing this great career in the beauty industry, especially since I get to combine art and beauty at the same time.
I have so many great people in my life that had push me to peruse my dreams, my family and friends are a huge part of what I had an accomplished.
I specialize on semi-permanent makeup… yes, semi-permanent makeup, you read it right!
What Is Semi-Permanent Makeup? Semi-permanent makeup continues to grow in popularity. It is a type of cosmetic tattooing that utilizes pharmaceutical-grade pigments for long-lasting results that perfectly complement your skin tone and appearance.
Pigment placed just beneath the dermis (upper layer of the skin) to simulate regular makeup (brows, lips, eyeliner) or to look like natural brow hair.
We have great prices, and this is not a money sing procedure for us; we take pride on our services and actually want to make our customers happy; we use the best products out in the market for permanent makeup, we use the best topical numbing creams to make sure our costumer are more than comfortable during the procedure.
One of my most popular services is Microblading, but lip blush is been getting more popular in the last year and also ink-less stretch marks removal ( aka stretch mark rejuvenation).
Yes, as I said, I’m always learning the best in the beauty industry, and I had travel to some other countries to learn new techniques.
I also offer training for those who want to start a side hustle or want to this as a full time career.
I want to change peoples life by giving the opportunity of learning this amazing beauty career and be their own bosses, where they can create their own schedule and have some more free time for their family & friends.
I don’t regret a bit making this career change
And if I had to choose again, I would choose it again.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Referrals is been one of the main source for new costumers. I love when my clients refer friends or family because they loved how my work looked and now they can’t wait to be the ones getting my services.
I have been blessed with many amazing clients that value my hard work and my art.
I mean we are Literally license tattoo artist
We just do a different kind of tattoo from the traditional body tattoo where we changed the technique and ink we use for this kind of procedures, and the industry just keeps improving as years go by.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Starting a new business is not easy and is scary to invest in something that you don’t know if for sure will generate income in the long run. When I decided to take the class and found the perfect school for me and I had enough money saved for my deposit to hold my spot for the class and to pay for my material and foray 2 month worth of expenses , my school offered payment plans to be able to pay the remaining amount month to month.
My parents offered help in case I struggle to pay my bills when I started, but as an adult woman I didn’t want to bother my parents with money so I kept my job as dental assistant. Worked long days and weekends to build clientele to have financial freedom to only do focus on my business.
At first I was scared to get myself on debt for a class that was over 9k and I was not sure if I would be able to find clientele after I graduated plus had to purchase equipment and materials, plus the cost of the rent for my studio.
But now looking back at it I would not see it as debt but more as an investment on myself to open doors I didn’t know I could open.
I think we all get afraid to take some risk in life but sometimes we don’t get good things if we don’t get out of our comfort zone.
